Mike Iannuzzi Interview:

SD.com: How old were you when you started playing?

Mike: I was 2 years old, I had a little red kit from like Wal-Mart or something like that, it was simple, snare, bass, tom, one cymbal. But I was influenced by my father, always watching him play at gigs, so to answer the question, 2 years old.

SD.com: Did you play in a school band or any drum corps?

Mike: No I did not play in a school band, I play snare in a bagpipe band! I have been doing that for about 4 years now and there is a bagpipe band scene here in Florida. That was my true passion until I heard tech metal drumming. But in the pipe band style of drumming, I learned all the intricate movements with the hands, such as the moller whip and stuff like that!

SD.com: Ever take any lessons?

Mike: No, well, yes and no. my father would show me beatings when I was like 11 or so, like bossanova beatings, and soca stuff, but he is a pro jazz drummer, so, I took the off time beats and I carried them over into more heavy beats with the double bass of course, and things of the nature.

SD.com: Who are your top 5 influences?

Mike: Hmmmmm that’s a hard one, my father, Buddy Rich, Dave Weckl, but more into the metal style, im in love with Between the Buried and Me, they are the most creative band out there now and days, there going to take metal to a whole new level, but the drummers name is Blake Richardson, I love Chris adlers playing in all lamb of god cds, and last drummer would be Despised Icon’s drummer Alex Pelletier, if you like breakdowns, blast beats, and insane double bass, he’s the man for it.

SD.com: Assuming that influences doesn’t mean favorites, who are your
favorites?

Mike: Lose to the same as before, Rich, Weckl, I love old jazz drumming like Max Roach, but solid drummers like Chris Adler, Jason Bittner, and Blake Richardson.

SD.com: Let us know 5 CD’s that are in your current rotation

Mike: Ha ok its different every day but, Necrophagist -epitaph, Lamb Of God- Ashes Of The Wake, Between The Buried And Me- All cds, Into the Moat- The Design, and Pantera- The Great Southern Trend kill (rip. dime)

SD.com: Can you remember a night you think was your best playing ever? If yes, when and where?

Mike: Not really, I mean, there’s always super good shows, and with my band demise of all reason, we played in a small town outside of Orlando called Kissimmee, and we were headlining, it was out second show but our first big show, and we were headlining and we didn’t know that until we got there. All the kids went crazy when we played, the pit opened up super big, and we had our music on myspace.com for a little under a week, and like a couple of the kids were singing our lyrics, and, that’s when you know that you’re a band, and it was an amazing feeling that I wish others could feel. So that was a good show!

SD.com: Do you have a favorite brand of drums or cymbals?

Mike: Well, I went to Canada this summer, and saw a drum company from brazil called Odery drums and percussion. Beautiful drums, all custom hand made drums that I hope to own one day. But for now I play mapex drums, series Orion Black Satan Customs, and my fathers Canadian so, Sabian is the choice for me, but im looking into meniel cymbals. I also play PDP drums, there very good drums. I also play DDrum pro acoustic triggers with an Alesis Dm5 mod., they work out amazingly!

SD.com: Do you have any pre-show rituals?

Mike: Yoga, Hahahah no not really, I try to warm up the hands, I do certain stretches to work my arms and legs but I don’t like to over prepare, and that’s happened to me before, and it was not a good show, my legs couldn’t play straight double bass for as long, and my blast beats were not consistent. So I stretch do a couple jumping jacks, and shake out the hands.

SD.com: If you could give one piece of advice to young drummers, it would be…

Mike: Use your ears, number one thing is to use your ears, because without them you can not play music. That’s the biggest thing, don’t play like a robot, its not always how fast you can play, use dynamics, monotone playing is amateur, use those ears kids!

SD.com: Who gave the best live performance you’ve ever seen?

Mike: Between The Buried And me, live at ozzfest 2006

SD.com: If you had to stop drumming, what would you want to do with your
life?

Mike: Do art, maybe tattoo, start a music school, the list goes on, but I don’t think im going to stop my drumming anytime soon.
