Greenville, SC’s blackened death metal outfit Lecherous Nocturne is giving fans an inside look at the technical brutality behind their new single “Metempsychosis,” with drummer Alex Lancia’s play-through video premiering exclusively via Sick Drummer Magazine.

Known for his precision and relentless power behind the kit, Lancia tears through “Metempsychosis” note for note, showcasing the natural, unquantized drum performance that defines the track. No sample replacement, no quantizing, just raw execution.
A Few Words from Alex:
We wanted to have full control over the recording process this time as we were not happy with the last album’s production quality. So we did all the tracking ourselves and we were able to focus a great deal more this way. We wanted the drums to sound natural so we didn’t use any sample replacement or quantizing. Ronnie Bjornstrom, who had worked with Zach on the Olkoth album, really delivered exactly what we were going for with the mixing and mastering. The snare drum, being a 14×8″ with a very thick shell, has a unique projection because of all the low end that drum produces. Rather than cutting through over top of all the other instruments, it projects almost underneath all the instruments like the bass guitar does. You know it’s there without the overwhelming and expected “ping” that you have in most extreme metal albums.
We all as individuals went through some tragic, life altering experiences during the writing and refinement of the album, and I believe that the intensity and despair of those times were channeled into the songs themselves.”

I used SM57s on the snare top/bottom, AT4040s on the overheads, ATM230s on the toms, SM7b on the high hats and a Blue Spark on the ride (sleeper mic for when you want bright but pleasant cymbals in a mix). Room mics were mid side with a M&M251 and Cathedral Pipes Regensburg Dom. I use a mix of Neve and API style preamps on the way on. CAPI VP312 and VP26 for shells. All the cymbals and rooms are Phoenix Audio DRS Q4s and some modded Golden Age 73s. The mix isn’t fancy, just gating, EQ, compression and moving things around till they’re aggressive and punchy. I didn’t use any samples besides kick. It’s a blend of his module sample and one of my maple kick drums. Everything is right off the mics with no editing, given the intensity and integrity required of the performance and music. Camera wise I used 2 of the Black Magic Pocket 6k’s and 2 of the Pocket 4k’s. Lumix and Rokinon lenses.
