Paul Mazurkiewicz

One of two remaining original members of Cannibal Corpse, drummer Paul Mazurkiewicz is a veritable force to be reckoned with. A composer and primary songwriter of the group, Paul’s intricate lyrics are recognized as being the group’s most complex, as seen in songs such as ‘Monolith,’ ‘Dead Human Collection,’ ‘Worm Infested,’ and ‘Frantic Disembowelment.’ Able to belt out fast, consistent drum tempos as well as slow, technical patterns, it’s no wonder Paul has been a staple of the group since the beginning.

Paul was originally in Tirant Sin alongside former Cannibal Corpse vocalist Chris Barnes, former CC guitarist Bob Rusay, Joe Morelli and Rich Ziegler back in 1986. He joined Cannibal Corpse upon meeting bassist Alex Webster and former guitarist Jack Owen, who were at that point in their own band, Beyond Death. Paul has said to have been in side projects here and there, among others Path of Man with Jack Owen, but has never strayed too far from Cannibal Corpse. Paul uses Tama Drums, Sabian Cymbals, Axis Pedals, and Regal Tip Sticks.

Paul Mazurkiewicz Interview:

SD.com: Paul, It’s an Honor to be able to do this interview with you. I remember the first day, of  the first tour, when you came to pick up Bill Lander @ my house, in Rochester,  how have things changed for you as a person and for Cannibal Corpse?

Paul: well a few things have changed for me over the years. the biggest  change is that i am now married and have daughter. also i think just getting older and hopefully a little wiser is a change in itself. As for  the band i believe we have stuck true to what we started 18 years ago and have just matured over that time. i think we are better songwriters and  better musicians now and hopefully we can just keep on improving.

SD.com: Cannibal Corpse played a sick show on Nov. 16, 2006 in Buffalo, @ The Town Ballroom. How have things changed, over the years, as far as crowd size and/or fan response?

Paul: Lucky for us we have the greatest, most diehard fans in the world and  we have had consistency over the years with crowd turnout and response. The show in buffalo was the biggest we’ve played in years and a lot of  cities were the same. in montreal we had 1,300 people! it was crazy!

SD.com: Out of all the stops on the upcoming US and Euro tours, where are you looking forward to the most, if anywhere?

Paul: I would say anyplace we haven’t played before will be the most  exciting. there are always 1 or 2 citiies or countries we got to that we’ve never been to. playing for fans that might have never seen you  before is awesome!

Paul: Not really. I just try to eat right and drink plenty of water. Before playing, I just stretch out a little and try to get the blood flowing.

SD.com: What is the one part of your kit that can’t ever be replaced?

Paul: My 21″ paiste rude ride!! i’ve had that for 20 plus years and if it  ever breaks , i quit!! hahaha, not really but it would be very hard to replace..

SD.com: Who are your top 5 Drumming influences?

Paul: Dave lombardo, Neil Peart, Gene Hoglan, Gus Pynn and Angelo Lacocoa, from Buffalo’s leviathan

SD.com: Assuming that influences doesn’t mean favorites, who are your favorites?

Paul: The previous five are my most influential and favorite.

SD.com: Can you tell us 3 CD’s in your current personal rotation?

Paul: I really like playing “make them suffer”. The songs just flows so good…..

SD.com: What would tell a young musician today, who wants to join a Death Metal band?

Pauli  If it is your dream then you must follow it. just try your hardest and  stay true to yourself. if it doesn’t work out at least you tried.

SD.com: How often do you practice, alone, on your drums?

Paul: I actually almost never practice by myself. I need to play with at  least one guitar player or I just can’t into it like I should.

SD.com: Thank you very much bro, is there anything you would like to add?

Paul: Thanks for the interview John! It’s an honor to be a part of sickdrummer.com! also thanks to all of our fans! you guys rule!!!
