Alex Marquez was born September 7th, 1970 in Miami, Florida and began playing drums in the School band. Alex lists Tommy Aldridge as his main drum influence, also pointing out that Gene Hoglan influenced his playing quite a bit.

His credits include recordings with bands like: Solstice, Demolition Hammer, Anger, Resurrection and of course the mighty Malevolent Creation. .

Alex recorded two albums with Solstice: “Self Titled” and “Pray”, one with Demolition Hammer; “Time Bomb”, two with Anger; “Miami, FL” and “prone to Violence”, one with Resurrection; “Embalmed Existance” and two with Malevolent Creation; “Retribution” & “Stillborn”.

Alex is currently back behind the skins after a five year hiatus and putting the finishing touches on his new band “La Venganza”.

He has also joined Panamanian Death/Thrashers Sargon, as their permanent drummer.

SD.com: How old were you when you started playing?

Alex: I started playing the snare at about 13 . full kit at 14

 

 

SD.com: Did you play in a school band or any drum corps?

Alex: yes thats how i got started it was Either drums or the tuba and well that was an easy choice . i wantedTo play guitar though.

 

 

SD.com: Who are your top 5 metal influences?

Alex: Steve Smith , Dave Weckl , Rod Morgenstein , Will Shepler , Dave Culross , Derrik Roddy , Nick Barker , man i could go on and on with that list.

but then i listen to alot of latin salsa like celia cruz and old school cuban music like beny more and other stuff like  that . my father had a big musical influence on me so i listen to different stuff but ALWAYS alot of metal.

 

 

SD.com: What do you do to warm up before a show?

Alex: well i try to drink as much water as possible . now that im older i got to but when i was younger nothing really just stretch and warm up on a practice pad.

 

 

SD.com: Do you read music? Regardless of answering yes or no, please tell us how it might have effected your playing?

Alex: well at one point i did in high school but i dont remember squat . just play by ear and pretty much always have.

 

 

 

 

SD.com: Can you tell us about the gear you use?

Alex: well right now i have a pearl masters Premium kit . 3 sabian aa 18 inch crashes, i bought an old sabian mega Bell ride used ,  sabian aa 13 fusion hats  on the right, aa 15 inch metal hats on the  left . aa 16, 18 and 20 inch chinas. Tama iron cobra pedals.

 

 

SD.com: If you could give one piece of advice to young drummers, it would be…

Alex: play guitar . nah just kidding . practice your ass off and dont quit your job your gonna need Money for sticks And cymbals . and if you become remotley popular and i know this sounds corney as hell  DONT DO DRUGS its Really the best piece of advice i could gve ANYONE . do as i say not as i do . lol well not anymore anyways.

 

 

SD.com: Who gave the best live performance you’ve ever seen?

Alex: probably Pete Sandoval just cant pinpoint one . they where all amazing . also saw Tommy  Aldridge with Whitesnake on the self titled tour and that was sick.

 

 

SD.com: If you had to stop drumming, what else would you do with that time?

Alex: well i actually did stop for a while to deal with my health issues and started a family and opened up a bar in Panama the country where i live now and that couldnt keep me away  so i guess the answer World be , DIE
