James Payne Interview:

SD.com: How old were you when you started playing?

James: I’ve started when i was about 10,i always listened to music since i was 3,and always wanted to play the drums, so my parents decided to send me to drums lessons and from there my passion started

SD.com: Did you play in a school band or any drum corps?

James: I used to. When i used to go to drums lessons in a public school i played in a small school band, but then i decided to play death metal, and from there i founded my band Hiss from the moat and dedicate most of my time for the band but also started to take drum lessons from Maxx Furian. This wasn’t a proper school but just private lessons.

SD.com: Who are your top 5 metal influences?

James: Well, this is an hard question, because I got a lot of influence from a lot of different drummers. For sure Derek Roddy, George Kollias and Tim Yeung are mine main inspiration, but i also like Travis Barker and a lot of not extremer drummers for their style, their personality behind the drum kit…I observe a lot of things of every single drummer around the world, i think that i can learn something from all of them…

SD.com: Who are some other of your favorites?

James: As i said, Travis Barker, i got a lot of inspiration from Joey Jordison when i was younger. I also like Vinnie Colaiuta, Steve Gadd, Jojo Meyer, Dave Weckl, all drummers that i think that it’s not possible for a drummer not to like them.

SD.com: Let us know 5 CD’s that are in your current rotation

James: Demigod by Behemoth, Ithyphallic by Nile, Ob(servant) by Psycroptic, Conquer the Throne by Hate Eternal and Antithesis by Origin

SD.com: What do you do to warm up before a show?

James: single notes strokes from 220 bpm to 260 bpm and a lot of stretching

SD.com: Do you read music? Regardless of answering yes or no, please tell us how it might have effected your playing?

James: Yes, i can read music and it doesn’t effected my death metal playing, but certainly effected me when I play alone like jazz music, blues, swing, shuffle and a lot of other styles.

SD.com: Can you tell us about the gear you use?

James: I haven’t got the complete drum set that I would love to have, but I feel comfortable with my Pearl drum set and I love how Paiste cymbals sounds. Now I’m going to buy Axis pedals to get a more comfortable feeling with really fast drumming. The pedals that I’m using now are Iron Cobra, which are very nice pedals, but not for fast drumming. As soon as I will have enough money I will finish my dream drum kit.

SD.com: If you could give one piece of advice to young drummers, it would be…

James: Well… till now I when I play people just tell me that fast drumming it’s not all, it’s not real drumming because there’s no groove in it and stuffs like that, I think that everyone must play what they feel, music is an expression of ourselves so if you feel to play fast drumming just do it even if someone tells you not to play fast. Of course you must be a complete drummer before specializing in one kind of playing. Just play what you feel that’s inside of you.

SD.com: Who gave the best live performance you’ve ever seen?

James: in extreme drumming I think that Dave Haley from Psycrpotic did the best performance I’ve ever seen, I never had the opportunity to see Derek Roddy or George Kollias live, but I’m sure they would be the best extreme drummers that a man can see.

In other styles of drumming Jojo Meyer has been the most impressive drummer I’ve ever seen, he’s original, has just the right grooving and knows exactly what he’s doing, so he can really impress you and explain why he does all the things that he does, and I think this is very important.

SD.com: Aside from drumming, what else do you like to do?

James: I like to play videogames, watch football, English football, he he and travel a lot but my life is based on music and drumming since I was little, so that’s what I mostly do.
