Thomas Lorenzi Interview:

SD.com: How old were you when you started playing

Thomas: I started playing drums when I was….old! I was about 20 years old. I used to play other instruments before: I can say I have been living in the world of music, since I was a small baby! However  I’m studying hard, even 4 hours a day, in order to make up for lost time.

SD.com: Did you play in a school band or any drum corps?

Thomas:  No. It is extremely rare for a country like Italy to find similiar things at school. It was not possibile for me to try such an experience.

SD.com: Ever take any lessons?

Thomas:  I started as a self-educated and then I took some lessons at the International Music Institute. After a couple of years I left school and started working with a teacher from Accademia di Musica Moderna. I developed a personal style there, a style which is perfect to play a special genre like death metal (and obviously moving across various genres).

SD.com: Who are your top 5 influences?

Thomas:  The drummers who most stimulated and influenced me when I was younger are: Dave Lombardo, Vinnie Paul, Igor Cavalera, Scott Travis, Johnny Rabb. Then I looked at some more extreme drummers!

SD.com: Assuming that influences doesn’t mean favorites, who are your favorites?

Thomas:  My favourites are: Mike Terrana, Inferno(Behemoth), George Kollias, Doc(Vader) Johnny  Rabb, Benny Greb, Franky Costanza(Dagoba), Witek(Decapitated). And obviously the ones who influenced me when I was younger.

SD.com: Let us know 5 CD’s that are in your current rotation

Thomas:  There are several records in my CD player and it depends on my mood. Now I’m listening to : BEHEMOTH the apostasy, NILE ithyphallic, COVENANT nexus polaris, DECAPITATED organic hallucinosis, DAGOBA what hell is about…

SD.com: Do you practice any specific rudiments or combo’s regularly?

Thomas:  Of corse!  Besides the usual exercises to train my wrists, fingers and ankles, I’m studying groove, joints of toms, bass drum and snare, accents on the snare, blast beat, and double bass drum. Moreover I’m studying our new songs in order to better my different drum’s parts.

SD.com: What is your favorite part of your drum kit?

Thomas:  Certainly all my MEINL cymbals (I’m their endorser) and especially my ride….it’s very “ping”. However I can say my black panther snare (made of hammered brass and limited edition) is the component which gives me more satisfaction. I love our feeling, both at low dynamics and when we need more volume. During our live concerts it’s really astonishing!!! And we have to remember the most important component of my kit: my “grappa”(kind of Italian spirits), which is always at my side!!!

SD.com: Do you have any pre-show rituals?

Thomas:  Besides the usual gymnastics to train ankles and wrists (a fundamental activity), all the components of DELIRIUM X TREMENS, use to drink some “grappa”…it gives us a boost!!

SD.com: Tell us about your Band.

Thomas:  DELIRIUM X TREMENS were born in1998 and after several line-up changes, we found the right line-up in 2003. Now we are: Thomas (drums), Med e Lopez (guitars), Pondro (bass) e Ciardo (voice). Thanx to the pubblication of our second record, the numerous live concerts and the work carried out by our home records “Punishment 18 Records”, we grew into the Italian and foreign death metal scenes. Our reviews are very good and our interviews appear on various web zines, specialized magazines, expanding our Technological Death Metal Hate. Our purpose is to look for a surgical, obsessive and original sound. Our Death Metal has a technological thrust and in fact there are both atmospherical pieces of music created by a synthetizer and clean voice parts. However it’s during our live concerts that we find our best dimension, provoking a real massacre: first try then trust!!!

SD.com: If you could give one piece of advice to young drummers, it would be…

Thomas:  The advice I want to give them is that you can’t believe you are the best drummer in the world: it’s the worst thing to do. It limits yourself and you can’t grow musically. You have to listen to all the advices and styles because you have always to learn…it’s fundamental to know people, to make relationships, to compare us with the others, to study hard and above all you have to enjoy yourself with your instrument!

SD.com: Who gave the best live performance you’ve ever seen?

Thomas:  I saw many drummers during their live concerts and now a days I think the level is very high, but the drummer who most affected me was Mike Terrana during a clinic in Italy at MEINL stand. It was very impressive: a mixture of feeling and pure power…I thought his drums would break under his strokes….Immediately after I had to drink a beer…I needed it!!! hhahahaha

SD.com: Have you been to the U.S.? If so, where? If not, Where would you like to most visit?

Thomas:  Unfortunately I’ve never been in U.S., but I wish I could visit this big country because U.S. represent a dream for me! Of course I’d like to go on tour with DELIRIUM X TREMENS! Moreover I’d like to travel a lot from the North to the South, to meet amusing people, to do the classical “coast to coast”, to breath the real U.S. spirit, to participate in the New York marathon race at least one time in my life, to visit the World Trade Center in memory of all those persons who died during the disaster in 2001…It’s incomprehensible what a mad human mind can do..I can’t realize that!

SD.com: Where can people purchase your CD?

Thomas:  You can require it contacting us on our official site (www.delriiumxtremens.com) or on our myspace page (www.myspace.com/deliriumxtremens) or more on our home records’ page (www.punishment18records.com) or finally on the various specialized national distributors.

SD.com: If you had to stop drumming, what else would you want to do with your life?

Thomas:  I hope to play drums until my old age! However, if I had to finish my career, I’d like to work in the musical scene. Moreover I teach to swim, I run, etc and so I could dedicate my life to various kinds of sports and finally I think I could cultivate my passion for the mountains and visit the most beautiful tops of the world!
