Seth Van De Loo Interview:

SDM: How old were you when you started playing?

Seth:  I was 8 years old when I had my first set of "real" drums, besides toys. So with a snare, bassdrum, a hihat and 1 tom I started playing my first beats. It’s 2010, so this year that’s already 25 years ago. Since 1997 I play for Severe Torture.

SDM: Did you play in a school band or any drum corps?

Seth:  I played in the local drum corps. Any opportunity I had to play, I took it. I wanted to play as much as possible, even if all I could use was a snare and maybe some bongo’s. But the corps got really boring after a few years. Especially when I found out what metal was. That’s when I knew I wanted to have my own band. There never was a school band really, we created our own band playing Metallica covers when we were 15 years old. With 2 of these guys I still play in Severe Torture.

SDM: Who are your top 5 metal influences?

Seth: 1. Lars Ulrich. 2. Steve Asheim 3. Flo Mounier 4. Sean Reinert 5. Derek Roddy

SDM: Who are some other of your favorites?

Seth: There are probably too many to mention, but I’d say: Paul Mazurkiewicz, Max Kolesne, Craig Smilowski, Alex Hernandez, Steve Shalaty, John Longstreth, Kevin Talley, Gene Hoglan and Pete Sandoval. I think all these drummers have added something new to deathmetal.

SDM: Let us know 5 CD’s that are in your current rotation

Seth:

Deicide – Legion
The Ordher – Kill the Betrayers
Sarcolytic – Thee Arcane Progeny
Mass Infection – Age of Recreation
Immolation – Close to a world Below

SDM: What do you do to warm up before a show?

Seth: I smoke a lot, and even more and another one… It helps me relax, I don’t really warm up too much, just losening up the wrists a bit and some stretching. The second or third song is usually the "hard one"for me, warming up doesn’t really help, on stage the tempature etc, is gonna be different anyway. By now I know what kind of songs to put in that position. That doesn’t mean we do a slow one, just one that’s easy for us. We don’t have real slow songs anyway, haha

SDM: Do you read music? Regardless of answering yes or no, please tell us how it might have effected your playing?

Seth: I can read music, but when I’m behind a drumkit don’t give me notes! I like to improvise too much. It helped me in a very important way though, it made me visualize my thinking in rythms, so It makes it easier to explain certain stuff to people who don’t read notes. Most of the time I already know what’s going on by feeling but sometimes notes help out.

SDM: Can you tell us about the gear you use?

Seth: Right now I use Tama drums, a simple rockstar that is. 1×22"bassdrum 10" 12" and 14" toms, Tama brass custom snare.DW 5000 pedals, for the last 10 years and not changing. Balbex sticks ultra jazz 7a and Amedia Cymbals, the best there are.

SDM: If you could give one piece of advice to young drummers, it would be…

Seth: Start without triggers and learn how to kick ass on a 100% acoustic drumset! Make sure to sit relaxed and most important, enjoy playing drums!!!

SDM: Who gave the best live performance you’ve ever seen?

Seth: That’s a really hard question, I’ve seen many good shows, and knowing how rough it can be on a stage every now and then, my respect goes out to all extreme drummers out there! One of the shows that comes to my head first now would be Cryptopsy playing at Wacken Open Air in 2001 at 11:00 clock in the morning. Flo was incredible that day and I was watching it from the stage, also taking some nice pictures.

SDM: Aside from drumming, what else do you like to do?

Seth: Read, watch horror, spend time in the garden and play darts. Anything normal and meant for old people… Best is to go to concerts of course!
