Duane Timlin

Dying Fetus is a death metal band formed in 1991 in Annapolis, Maryland, United States. As of 2006, its line-up consists of John Gallagher (guitar, vocals), Mike Kimball (guitar), Sean Beasley (bass) and Duane Timlin (drums). Dying Fetus is often described as technical death metal, and the band is renowned for its technical proficiency.

Dying Fetus’s music is characterized by extremely fast blast beats, complex riffing and slow breakdowns. The vocals range from very low death growls to more abrasive upper-throat screams. Lyrics-wise, the band dabbled in the usual gory death metal subject matter on their early albums, but by 2000’s Destroy the Opposition, the band had practically completely shifted to political lyrics, mostly consisting of aggressive critique addressed towards things such as religion, corporations, consumerism and war.

Since the band’s start, Dying Fetus have made a name for themselves in the death metal scene by relentless shows and vigorous touring schedules, which has seen them victoriously climb the ladder to become one of the genre’s top flight outfits. The brutal and harsh sound of the group has already become an inspiration to many bands.

Duane Timlin Interview:

SD.com: You are about to start a 28 city tour…What do you like and dislike most about touring?

DT: Yes, im getting ready to go out with the powerhouse Dying Fetus! with Cannibal Corpse, Necrophagist, and Unmerciful. Touring is great! I love traveling, interacting with fans, friends and family that are abroad, Also I get to see and and play great shows with bands that im into or that have inspired me. Really the only thing i dislike about touring is being away from my lady, and my dogs. When you sit a home for awhile it’s easy to become lazy and really enjoy home life, I am far from lazy though.

SD.com: How old were you when you started playing?

DT: My dad is a guitar player who used to play the local scene back in Milwaukee, so I’ve been around music forever. When he would go to practice my mom would send us off with him so I sat down behind a drum kit around four, I started really playing at five, I fell in love with them and it’s all been down hill from there.

SD.com: Did you play in a school band or any drum corps?

DT: I did play throughout middle and high school, but look it this, by the time I hit middle school the first thing I wanted to do obviously wanted to join the drum line but I was too advanced, and they tried to give me some bullshit that it was too full.  So I was forced to take up the trumpet, I learned many other instruments as well so I excelled at this as well, so I heard the same shit when I got into high school as well. However I did get a chance to kick it on the drums in some parades, basketball games shit like that. It didnt hurt me as much as it helped me, I was already forming bands by the time I was in eighth grade so the hell with them.

SD.com: Who are your top 5 influences?

DT: I’m a Zappa kid so im into Ralph Humphries, Vinnie Colliouta, Terry Bozzio, Chad Whackerman(my jaw was on the floor when I seen this guy live) Stuart Copeland was a big influence as well.

SD.com: Assuming that influences doesn’t mean favorites, who are your favorites?

DT: All of the above! it’s always so hard to answer these questions, but I would have to say the guys i’ve played under (the guys who’ve challenged me) Talley,Roddy, toured with. Dave Culross, Tony Lauerano, Nick Barker, John Longstrength John Merryman. My favs are the guys I can pick shit up from learn and grow. There are alot of drummers I enjoy, im not just plugging my boys, so don’t get your feelings hurt!

SD.com: Let us know 5 CD’s that are in your current rotation

DT: Aside from “War of Attrition The new Dying Fetus, “Rise and Conquer” The new Forest of Impaled, The Never Again and Illutrate stuff  it would be.

Zappa all the time (any)
Mastodon “Remission”
Paco de Lucia, Al Di Meola, John Mclaughlin, “The guitar Trio
Medeski, Martin,Wood
Nick Cave Greatest hits
The Mr. Bungle three
Estradasphere
and a whole lot of metal

SD.com: Can you remember a night you think was your best playing ever? If yes, when and where?

DT: I like to think my playing is at it’s best everynight, there are alot of nights where I sounded great and felt great but unfortunatly it’s the shitty awful nights that stick with you so it’s hard to pick the one time and the where. I have a pretty good record though!

SD.com: Do you have a favorite brand of drums?

DT: I am rather fond of Tamas, but since I don’t have an endorsement, I don’t like plugging gear.

Duane Timlin

SD.com: If you could give one piece of advice to young drummers, it would be…

DT: Practice, Practice, Practice, don’t argue with band members! your gonna be good but your never going to be the best there is always somebody better, couple of stories. J.P. the guitarist of Divine got into this jazz shit that was all about chords that had to be on time so we’d be touring I’d be driving and he’d be playing and playing to a click it would piss me off to no end, we did use and played to clicks, but looking back it was and still is what stuck with me. Get a click and play to it!  Also listen! I’ve learned more from guitar players than drummers, make sure everyone is on your level, look it ive played with Brian Griffin, J.P. Soars two of the most anal guys on the planet, now im with Gallagher, and Kimball, and a host of great players. Not much to make sense of but practice, and listen dont argue, and finall the best advice I ever recieved was from an old friend Bill Taylor, and that was piss on every tree.

SD.com: Who gave the best live performance you’ve ever seen?

DT: Chad Whackerman and the band from Utopia, And Pink Floyd.

SD.com: If you had to stop drumming, what would you want to do with your life?

DT: Move into music business, from my ranch in Texas, which I would have to maintain. My girl would love it. but Im not going anywhere for a while Im feeling great. Thanks to all who have helpd me and supported me through the years! all the people out there smoking me out before, during, and after the shows. And was up to all my drummin homies and new guys I havent met yet! I’ll be seeing ya’ll sooner than later. Rise and Conquer.
