Disruptor

Mangis was born in Vilnius, Lithuania, 27th of December 1981. Started listening to metal music at the age of 5 years, but began playing drums just at the age of 18 in a year 2000. First years where mostly dedicated to play hard rock/heavy metal covers plus taking private drum lessons
regulary. Few bands such as Hard Wind, Dark Void, Altars of Insanity could be mentioned.  Every progress’ step in drumming was intertwined with going more extreme in musical direction. In a year 2003 Mangis was invited to join  black/pagan metal band Magna Bestia to do a demo record and play few bigger shows live.

The real  self-actualization begins  with  summoning up the death/black/gore band GROL. Here Mangis is also taking part in creating guitar riffs and writting lyrics. Since the very beginning band plays live often and records and album “True Stench Never Dies” which is released by Japanese label Bloodbath.

After while Mangis joins another death metal band D.A.R to perform live and record and album later. Currently he is working on new GROL stuff and promises to give some studio and live videos in the near future.

Disruptor Interview:

SD.com: How old were you when you started playing?

Mangis: Just 18.So I have just 6 years of experience. And I have to add that much of my time was wasted in a search for a constant band and suitable practice place. Just few last years are realy seriously dedicated to drumming.

SD.com: Did you play in a school band or any drum corps?

Mangis: I started to play with my friends who involved me in drumming. Took private lessons for few years. Always admired blasting and fast double bass drumming. But mostly I am self taught.

SD.com: Who are your top 5 influences?

Mangis:

1. Bill Ward – for showing how drums can improvise and support guitar
2. Ken Owen – for showing the variety of technic
3. Matte Modin – for the ultimate speed
4. Fenriz – for the heavy feel
5. Derek Roddy – for the balanced playing

SD.com: Assuming that influences doesn’t mean favorites, who are your favorites?

Mangis:

1. Chad Walls
2. Jon Engman
3. George Kollias
4. Dirk Dikler
5. John Longstreth

SD.com: Let us know 5 CD’s that are in your current rotation

Mangis:

1. Any CD of Derek Roddy’s Drumming
2. Despondency “God on Acid”
3. Any  CD of Black Sabbath (Ozzy era)
4. Malevolent Creation “Warkult”
5. Dark Funeral “Vobiscum Satanas”

SD.com: Can you remember a night you think was your best playing ever? If yes, when and where?

Mangis: I think every next show is more or less played better than my earlier shows – I really feel the progress. Yet I am sure that the best playing doesn’t mean best drumming as a drummer alone. Best shows are the shows when whole band is as one unit. I would say supporting Cannibal Corpse two years ago was one the greatest nights in this meaning!

SD.com: Do you have a favorite brand of drums or cymbals?

Mangis: Most of my Cymbals are Paiste. It is the best combination of sound quality and price. I really like Vater drumsticks. I use Yahama double bass pedal. I would not like to speak about my current drum kit, because it is really not good. But I am planning to get a new one in the future. And also I have a Roland e-drum kit to practice at home + lots of trainning pads everywhere. I like to build my own trainning pad drumkits from wood and cover it with rubber carpet to make it sound and rebound better.

SD.com: If you could give one piece of advice to young drummers, it would be…

Mangis: PRACTICE+PATIENCE=RESULT!

SD.com: Who gave the best live performance you’ve ever seen?

Mangis: George Kollias with Nile a half year ago! And Tony Laureano’s show with Malevolent Creation was impressive. It was like I can not believe it is possible to play like this until I see it with my own eyes!

SD.com: What is your favorite Beer?

Mangis: Warsteiner. I should be patriotic and prefer my native beer – but I can not bear the fact you get always different taste when You open a bottle with the same label!

SD.com: If you had to stop drumming, what would you want to do with your life?

Mangis: Go back to train Karate – the activity I have been doing for 8 years till I started to drum!
