Chase Brickenden Interview:

SDM: How old were you when you started playing?

Chase: It’s questionable when that was… My old man is a drummer and I was in band in school but I didn’t get serious about the drumset until I was 15.

SDM: Did you play in a school band or any drum corps?

Chase: Yea, I was in band untill my junior year of High School. We had a badass drum instructor in High School, who played snare for the Blue Devils. My High School marching band was hard core, DCI style. It was kinda lame, but a really great experience none the less.

SDM: Ever take any lessons?

Chase: My entire playing career has been one long lesson…

SDM: Who are your top 5 influences?

Chase: Wow… I would have to say the top five players that have influenced my playing are Flo Mounier, Marco Minnemann, Chuck Silverman, Danny Carey and Vinnie Colaiuta. Can’t believe I have to stop there…

SDM: Assuming that influences doesn't mean favorites, who are your favorites?

Chase: Oh man… Flo Mounier, Jojo Mayer, Marco Minnemann, Daphnis Prieto, Vinnie Paul, Vinnie Colaiuta, Weckl, Lang, Gadd, Garibaldi, Dennis Chambers, Ron Bruner Jr., John Blackwell, Tony Royster Jr., George Kollias, John Longstreth, Danny Carey and the list goes on and on

SDM: Let us know 5 CD's that are in your current rotation

Chase:

Jojo Mayer – Prohibited Beats
Daphnis Prieto – About the Monks
All Pantera
Karnivool – Sound Awake
Cryptopsy – And Then You’ll Beg

SDM: Can you remember a night you think was your best playing ever? If yes, when and where?

Chase: I had a lot of great nights on my last tour with Otep… I know it's not death metal guys! But I got to smash drums so hard and really lay into that back beat playing with some fantastic musicians.

SDM: Do you have a favorite brand of drums or cymbals?

Chase: I am currently representing Promark Drumsticks (The Best!!!) and Turkish Cymbals which are amazing! The ride I’m using is one of my favorite cymbals ever and I got some really cool effects cymbals from them as well. Their 9” riveted inverted bell is magic on a cymbal stand.

SDM: Do you have any pre-show rituals?

Chase: I stretch a lot and play on a pad or my legs. I also do a lot of visualization and get myself into a focused mental state and in the groove before I set foot on stage.

SDM: If you could give one piece of advice to young drummers, it would be…

Chase: Practice A LOT and practice like a master is watching when you do it! If you practice like that all the time you’ll get SOOOOO MUCH done! Play to a click as much as humanly possible… Walk around listening to a click lol! Always challenge yourself.. And remember, you can have all the icing but if you have no cake, no one is gonna want a piece.

SDM: Who gave the best live performance you've ever seen?

Chase: Oh man! I don't know… I was completely stunned by Marco Minnemann when I saw him at a clinic and at a performance at the baked potato later that evening. Flo and George amazed me but as far as an overall live performance. Meshuggah followed by Tool at the Long Beach arena was the best show I've seen. It at least moved me the most. Karnivool at the Troubador was outstanding. Too many great shows!

SDM: If you had to stop drumming, what would you want to do with your life?

Chase: There is nothing besides drums my man.
