Subrick's Picks: A look At Up & Coming Drummers – Pick 6

Well, well, well. We find ourselves back here again. I am the king picker himself, Subrick, here to give you a lethal dose of awesome drummers. For the introduction to today’s article, I would like to give you an update on my musical endeavors outside of here and Youtube. One week from Saturday I will be recording partial drums for a band from Massachusetts known as Pandora’s Toybox, who I’ll include in the links at the end of the article. They are a somewhat comedic gothic rock band (very dry, sarcastic humor), and they’re fronted by a personal friend of mine who goes under the pseudonym Morte McAdaver. He is also the guitarist and composer for Massachusetts gothic doom band Sorrowseed, whose first full length record, “The Extinction Prophecies”, was released last year. Morte has been sending me the scratch tracks and I’ve been programming drums over them for when I actually record them at Stillwork Studios in Holyoke, MA, and I hafta say these are some pretty cool songs he’s got written. As mentioned, they’re not a metal band, although a lot of metal influence creeps into the work. So far they’ve released one album, “Evil and Other Pastimes”, and one EP, “Misbegotten Candy”. The name of the record I’ll be playing on is entitled “Bleakshow”, and will see release later this year.
For your chance to be featured, all you have to do is post a video of you drumming to YouTube, Vimeo or whatever video site you prefer, and embed the link on this website in the SD Videos section. Nothing more, nothing less, but you do need to be a registered member of our site to post.
There are three categories on which I base my selections: Playing Ability, Production Value, and Kit Sound. All three are pretty straight forward, but here’s what I specifically look for with each category.
Playing Ability: I look to see if a player is technically sound; timing is good, endurance and power are up to par, among other, more miniscule things.
Production Value: I prefer to watch video from a good quality camera, or studio quality. By studio quality, I don’t mean the greatest production sound ever recorded. I classify studio quality as a drumming performance recorded with microphones and/or triggers. Electronic kits are very much encouraged (especially when using less conventional samples). Now, if you have sound quality that isn’t as good, that doesn’t mean you won't be included in my selection process. Everyone is eligible to be featured.
Kit Sound: One of the most important characteristics! We all have read Eyal Levi’s article about why drum performances are always sound replaced these days. For those who haven’t, the basic gist of it is because drummers don’t know how to tune their drums. Considering that many drum videos I see on YouTube involve players that have really bad sounding kits, it seems rarer and rarer that drummers actually tune their drums. Meet all three of these criteria, and you have a shot to be featured. You could be playing the most radio friendly Disney pop imaginable, but if I feel your video meets these criteria, you could make the front page.
Now then, after all of that, let us proceed with the picking!
I realize that this man was given an interview with the website earlier this week, but I cannot resist. The drummer this week is Finland’s Ukri Suvilehto, a 17 year old prodigy of a player that can blast with the best of them. Never before have I seen someone so talented at such a young age, younger than me even. He has mastered the one foot blast, he has mastered double bass, and he has mastered everything there is in terms of death metal drumming. Ukri, known on Youtube as UgE, first got known by posting a full cover of Nile’s “Kafir” in late 2009 at the age of 16. As of this writing, that video has attained over 81,000 views on Youtube, and Ukri’s channel has garnered more than 2500 subscribers. He has covered songs from bands as diverse as Slipknot, Amoral, Dimmu Borgir, Divine Heresy, Meshuggah, Cannibal Corpse, Whitechapel, In Flames, Diablo, Behemoth, Sotajumala, and Avenged Sevenfold (he took down those videos sadly). Ukri uses a Tama Superstar seven-piece drum kit, with Sabian, Meinl, Stagg, and Paiste cymbals. He also uses Demon Drive pedals, which I feel makes those pedals all the more awesome. Right now Ukri’s solo project, Psykoosi, has recorded its first EP and was released last year.
