Steve Asheim Talks About New Deicide – In The Minds of Evil + NEW Track + Tour Dates

Legendary Florida death metal drummer Steve Asheim and Deicide will release their new album "In The Minds Of Evil" on November 25 via Century Media Records. The CD was recorded at AudioHammer Studios in Sanford, Florida with producer Jason Suecof.

The title track can now be streamed below the short interview below. These questions were sent to Steve just today about the new album, and he immediately replied, as he always does. Thanks Steve, see you at a show soon!

SDM:  'In The Minds of Evil' sounds immense… reminds us a bit of an older sounding Deicide, which is just fine with us! Do you feel this way? or do you have other thoughts on the overall sound of this one?

Steve: No I agree. And that was the point, really. We intentionally went for an old school feel for the songs and also and old school sound for the recording. We were shooting for songs like the 1st record but sound like OUTC. I think we got there with this one. I heard the mixes coming together and was like "Awwwhellyeaahhh!!!".

SDM:  How much of the album did you write, as compared to previous releases?

Steve: This was a band effort but we all brought some solid pieces in. I put together 2 full songs and a couple other parts sprinkled in here and there. I'd been writing my ass off these past few records and I felt it was time to get some other writers in on the action. It had appeared people were getting sick of my tunes. I wrote all of TSOR and folks seemed to dig that one. Then I wrote all of TDDUP and people basically shit on that. THWG I wrote most of and Jack wrote a few on, and people mainly dug his stuff. So I needed a writing break this time around where I could just concentrate on drumming, which looks like is a welcome change for everyone, including me.

SDM:  I know you are used to working with Jason Suecof, but was there anything different about the way you approached the tracking or actually carried out during the tracking?

Steve: Not really for the tracking but we did rehearse all the tunes to click tracks we'd prepared. And we worked those tracks to death, making sure every click tempo and signature change was exactly what it needed to be for maximum effect for each song. Actual tracking I'd knocked out in 6 or 8 hours though.

SDM:  Still using all the same gear? Anything new?

Steve: Same gear man. I like to stick with what works, you know. I'm not a big gear-head, but the gear I do have I like to be quality, tough, and looking brand new. Pearl, Paiste, Axis, Vater, Alesis. All top brands whose gear I really enjoy throwing a beating on.

SDM: How excited are you to be hitting the road next week with Broken Hope, Disgorge and Necronomicon? That's NUTS!

Steve: Yeah it'll be a good run. We toured w/ Broken Hope back in '95 or '96. Just Jeremy & Sean in the band now. Joe's gone now and Brian has a studio & works for LOG now. But it's good to have them back as a band and the other bands on the bill, should be a great tour.

SDM:  What's going on with Order of Ennead?

Steve: Not much, but Kevin is pretty eager to start demoing some new material, so we may get busy on some of that soon. Maybe seek out a deal if there's one to be had. I really enjoyed that stuff, so I look forward to trying to keep it alive.
