Luke Boyd – 12 Gauge Rampage – Interview December 2023

G’day guys, I’m Luke Boyd from Blue Mountains-based death metal band 12 gauge Rampage. I’ve been playing drums since I was 14, after hearing the Iowa album from Slipknot and Joey’s iconic drum sound. I started playing in bands from an early age but didn’t start taking metal seriously until I joined a local metal band, Festering Drippage, with whom I recorded the EP “Fungally Infected Fistathon,” and did a number of shows over a few years being lucky enough to play along dying fetus, macabre and heaps of awesome bands.

My current band, 12 Gauge Rampage, has been very active lately with numerous tours of Australia, and planning on going overseas as of next year (2024). We released our album “Unleash the Rage” in 2021, followed by our first film clip, “Killed More Cunce Than Covid,” and then later released our single “VB Killing Spree” with another film clip. We plan to release much more brutal metal in 2024 and hope to make it overseas in 2024.

SDM: What do you do to warm up before a show?

Luke: I like to stretch before I practice or play live; I never really used to until recently; I just focus on different rudiments at different tempos with both hands and feet.

SDM: Do you read music? Regardless of answering yes or no, please tell us how it might have affected your playing.

Luke: Yes, I can read music but don’t often have to, which is great, lol!

SDM: Can you tell us about the gear you use?

Luke: I use a Tama Starclassic in Magma Burst, which I’ve been playing for a number of years now, and I can’t fault it! it plays itself; it has the warmest tone in any drumkit I’ve ever played, it has 8′ 10′ 12′ 14′ toms along with a 22′ bass drum and a 13′ 6.5′ snare that I absolutely love playing, along with a mix of Rech Platinum and Atomic Series Cymbals (who I’m currently endorsed by). I use a Gibraltar gcs450c curved rack to hold all my stuff together… lol.

SDM: If you could give one piece of advice to younger drummers, it would be…

Luke: Practice makes perfect, and you won’t see results if you’re not practicing as often as you can. Pay extra attention to your weaker side, and don’t cut corners; it’s meant to hurt!

SDM: Who gave the best live performance you’ve ever seen?

Luke: Jinjer at the Manning Bar in Sydney 2022! it was incredible; they were so tight, and the sound was next level. I also got to meet Eugene and managed to get his set list, which was pretty sick.

SDM: Aside from drumming, what else do you like to do?

Luke: Spending time with my family is very important to me, so I do that as much as possible. I love being out on my dirt bike as often as I can with my son, playing guitar in my other band, Naugrim, and listening to as much music as possible.
