David McGraw of Cattle Decapitation Talks About New Record and More

Cattle Decapitation has begun the writing process for the follow up to 2012's Monolith of Inhumanity, which has been lauded as the band's finest and most complex release to date.

Travis Ryan comments: "Since we got home from the Summer Slaughter Tour, the guys have been hard at work on new material! I actually go in next week to grab a quick run through of the first new track they have completed so I can start writing lyrics to it. I have heard the track and I hate to say anything just yet because we will be spending the next full year from now working on the next album, but I will say the stuff they're working on is intense. I can't wait to start writing lyrics to it and so far is in league with one of our current musical aspirations… to make fans of our last record shit themselves! We'll be taking a small break to play a few shows in our region with Eyehategod and our friends Strong Intention on their January tour!"

Here's what Drummer David McGraw had to say…

SDM:  Can you tell us how many tracks have been written for the next Cattle release, and maybe how many you guys are shooting for?

David: We have two tracks written so far, they are still in the early stages so we'll see how they continue to develop until it's time to hit the studio. We're not sure yet how many songs exactly, probably about the same as the last record, with 2 bonus tracks instead of one, we'll see!.

SDM:  What can we expect after the success of your previous release, 'Monolith of Inhumanity?'

David: In Cattle, we all agree that we like how MOI turned out, but there is always room for improvement, and I feel that the new material we have written so far has great potential  to surpass MOI.  That's as far as the writing aspect goes. As far as touring we have some cool stuff in the works, mainly international stuff, nothing major for awhile though, we need the time off to write and catch up with other things in life as well hehe.

SDM:  Will you be changing your gear or setup (configuration) at all for the next record?

David: I've been playing around with ideas regarding set-up. I'm pretty tired of the traditional "metal" aesthetics, the traditional double kick set. Thing is, for a band like Cattle, I feel like it's necessary to have that set-up. Don't get me wrong though, I've had to play shows with only one tom before (usually overseas) mainly when the lines of communication become blurry about the back-line. I might get more experimental with this next tour cycle.

SDM:  You have 3 upcoming shows with Eyehategod this month… are you a fan of their music?

David: Personally, I was never one to be into EHG, but I have a lot of respect for that band. It's really an honor to get to share the stage with them, can't wait!

SDM:  Anything solid to tell us about regarding Sleep Terror?

David: Not really, I know Luke has been playing some shows as a one-man-band lately up in the Seattle area. I look forward to the day in which I have better news on that front. Either way, Luke continues to  write some of the best DM out there, so keep checking out his youtube channel – lot's of great tunes up there.

SDM:  Any other news to share?

David: Yeah, as far as drumming goes, I still plan to get some video footage out soon, as well as a website loaded with content that will be helpful to anyone looking to learn, share and teach others as well. It's gonna take a bit longer than expected since I'm also diving myself in the world of web development, a new found passion of mine. There's also a touring artist service site that I'm putting together that will be fun to see come to life. So yeah, lots going right now!

Cattle Decapitation's next album is tentatively due out early 2015. Stay tuned for more updates on the new record and future tour dates.
