Hudson Music Co-Founder Rob Wallis Announces The Release of Drum Guru iPad/iPhone App

Rob Wallis, founder of Hudson Music and DCI Music Video, and longtime president of Drummers Collective School of Music in New York City, has announced the release of a revolutionary new way to learn to play the drums: an educational iPad/iPhone application, Drum Guru™. This app maintains the educational quality and integrity that the world has come to expect from Hudson Music, while offering a more convenient path to self-paced lessons with major artists like Steve Gadd, Steve Smith, Mike Portnoy and Chad Smith.

Drum Guru™ delivers interactive, multimedia drum lessons. It is a free app that comes with a sampler pack containing seven lessons for trial. Additional packs, each with 7-10 lessons, are priced from $3.99 to $4.99, and can be purchased and downloaded within the app by clicking on the Catalog button at the bottom of the screen (which displays all the packs available for purchase).

All the material currently available on Drum Guru™ is brand new, shot specifically for this app, and cannot be obtained anywhere else. Initial pack offerings include Beginner Rock Fill Packs, Beginner Rock Groove Packs, Classic Rock Fill Packs, and Classic Rock Groove Packs, in addition to custom Artist Packs from Steve Gadd, Steve Smith, Mike Portnoy, and Chad Smith. The Classic Rock packs have been designed to teach some of the most frequently encountered and requested grooves and fills played by cover, club date, and party bands. New lesson packs will be released regularly.

Each individual lesson delivers high-quality video in “Lesson Mode” that features a short video tutorial. This video can be played back at regular speed or in slow motion for analysis (and can be enlarged to fit the entire iPad screen). Below the video panel, the musical example being taught is displayed in standard musical notation.

With a tap of the finger, the user can switch to “Practice Mode.” Here, a transcription of the lesson appears on the screen, which can be played back for listening and interactive practice. Via control buttons along the top of the screen, the user can start, stop, and loop playback; control the volume of the playback example; increase or decrease the tempo; and turn the drums and the click track in the example on or off individually.

A third tab for each lesson, “Pack Info,” contains all relevant information about the lesson pack, including overview, lesson descriptions, drum key, and information about the artists/teachers.

Users simply tap the price button within the app’s Catalog to purchase a pack. Once downloaded, these packs show up in the Library, which is the user’s personal collection of purchased material. In the Library, the list of packs/lessons appears on the left side of the screen, while the actual lesson content (video/notation) is displayed on the right. The user taps a lesson in the list on the left, and the video lesson and notation for that lesson then appear on the right. Once purchased, the pack is yours to use over and over again.

Users can share updates about what they are practicing on Facebook and Twitter.

Drum Guru™ features world-class artists and teachers in its lessons. Drum superstar Steve Smith (Journey, Vital Information) teaches classic Journey grooves/fills and advanced soloing concepts in his artist packs. Steve also joins well-known Drum Guru™ staff educators Joe Bergamini and Mike Sorrentino in teaching beginner concepts and classic rock lessons. Living legend Steve Gadd (Eric Clapton, Paul Simon, James Taylor, Chick Corea) covers many of his signature rudimental concepts, as well as shuffles and advanced groupings and fills. Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers) delivers several artist packs in which he breaks down the drum parts from classic Chili Peppers material. Popular progressive powerhouse Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater) performs and teaches material from his two newest bands, Adrenaline Mob and Flying Colors, as well as demonstrating classic concepts from his influences, including Ringo Starr, John Bonham, Neil Peart, and others. Each of these artists has several packs already available for purchase.
