Drummer for the band A Breath Before Surfacing, Trevor Gunning combines great chops with technical speed and brutality. With an open approach and the ability to explore all avenues and styles, Trevor pushes the boundaries of traditional drumming and incoporates many musical genres. His style is a good example of today's new generation of drumming!     

I started playing drums when I was about 8 years old. I remember my first live show was less than a year into it. There was this christian church band that would cover Metallica songs, but change the vocals around with christian lyrics.. I jammed out 'Sad But True' infront of the entire church and rocked it! Ever since then I knew drumming was my passion! I did my fair share of bangin on pots and pans growing up, until I got my first kit in the 5th grade. Some POS I cant remember the name. But true fact, I still play on the same Sabian hi hats today. I've been touring with A Breath Before Surfacing since the summer of 2006. Ill continue to tour Canada, Europe, the United States and more in the years to come! My playing continues to progress, adapt, and innovate to explore as many avenues as possible.

SD.com: How old were you when you started playing?

Trevor: I was about 8 years old when I first started. I remember being so small you couldnt see me behind the drum kit.

 

 

SD.com: Did you play in a school band or any drum corps?

Trevor: Nope..

 

 

SD.com: Who are your top 5 influences?

Trevor: Man there are so many… Top five, I would say; Derek Roddy, Marco Minneman, Tim Yeung, Mike Mangini and Johnny Rabb.

 

 

SD.com: Assuming that influences doesn't mean favorites, who are your favorites?

Trevor: Danny Carey of Tool is one of my all time favoite drummers. John Bonham, Justin Rouselle, Tim Waterson, Kevin Talley, Marco Pitruzzella, Brad Fickeisen, Flo Mounier, Alex Pelletier, Shannon Lucas, many more I cant think of..

SD.com: What do you do to warm up before a show?

Trevor: Stretch!!! Get loose, drink an energy drink or two, warm up as much as possible.

 

 

SD.com: Can you remember a night you think was your best playing ever? If yes, when and where?

Trevor: I don't think there is a single night where I've played my best.. I had alot of good nights when I was on tour with Marco Pitruzella of Brain Drill in the winter of 2007. I always try to perform my best when I step behind the kit.

 

 

 

 

 

SD.com: Do you have a favorite brand of drums or cymbals?

Trevor: DW drums, Sabian HHX, AAX, AA, Hand Hammered cymbals!

 

 

SD.com: If you could give one piece of advice to young drummers, it would be…

Trevor: I would tell them to practice as much as possible. And practice at uncomfortable speeds. Track your progress with a metronome. Always be loose, and play with confidence!

 

 

SD.com: Who gave the best live performance you've ever seen?

Trevor: Marco Minnemann playing with Necrophagist on the Summer Slaughter Tour. Wow! That's all I can say.

 

 

SD.com: If you had to stop drumming, what would you want to do with your life?

Trevor: I dont know what id do.. Probably beat box or something. hahaha idk
