I started playing in a schoolband, when i was 17 years old…The only reason for playing drums was, that the drummer wasn’t able to play the stuff we wanted to, so i decided to fill in his place and let him sing…for me it was like finally finding a creative way to express myself. i also played guitar and piano before but never felt happy with that.

After 2 years i joined the band “jigsaw” which met my demand. this was actually my first contact to metallic sounds and playing with a doublebasspedal…the singer and bassplayer just went to a musicstore, gave me the bill and said: “well, paul, now you have to play doublebass” haha..thx for that. We played loads of local gigs and i was able to improve my drumming skills.

Playing a show in Berlin i met Simon, who is one of my faithful colleagues now…we both had the same musical interests and soon decided to jam together..years later i joined the recently established band “war from a harlots mouth” in which Simon was playing guitar in. Since then i enjoy every note i play and i’m thankful for being able to…

SD.com: How old were you when you started playing?

Paule: Hi, i started playing 8 years ago, when i was 15

 

 

SD.com: Did you play in a school band or any drum corps?

Paule: NO! ( yes..)

 

 

SD.com: Who are your top 5 influences?

Paule: Thomas Haake, Alex Pelletier, Jojo Mayer and the other 2 drummers…haha

 

 

SD.com: Assuming that influences doesn’t mean favorites, who are your favorites?

Paule: Assuming that i’m not really influenced by music that does not wake my interest i would say, that it’s the same answer as before 😉 I think lots of drummers have an influence on me, because i’m not only listening to 5 bands..

SD.com: What do you do to warm up before a show?

Paule: I wear a pullover and stand up on my toes to warm my muscles…

 

 

SD.com: Can you remember a night you think was your best playing ever? If yes, when and where?

Paule: I can’t really remember the “best” one, but i can remember some of the worst!

 

 

SD.com: Do you have a favorite brand of drums or cymbals?

Paule: Never thought that i would say this, but since i am a “Meinl Cymbals” endorser i’m really in love with those cymbals 🙂 I also think, that “Pearl” have the best drumsound espescially their snares!

 

 

 

 

SD.com: If you could give one piece of advice to young drummers, it would be…

Paule: Don’t force your extremities to do what they wont understand or are not able to play, set your goals and dont lose track of them! You cant get ahead of somebody if you step into someone else’s footsteps.

 

 

SD.com: Who gave the best live performance you’ve ever seen?

Paule: Meshuggah in “Hamburg, Germany”. It was the most impressive and powerful performance i have ever seen in my life…you could really feel how everybody just let lose of his body and 100%ly enjoyed the music. I also saw Jojo Mayer playing with his band “Nerve”. This dude is seriously out of this world…

 

 

SD.com: If you had to stop drumming, what would you want to do with your life?

Paule: I think i would start recording or producing…Or i would join a musicschool. Maybe i would just start painting haha..

 

 

SD.com: Do you have any hobbies or other interests outside of drumming?

Paule: Music as its best, nature and i recently enjoy mathematics…WHAT?
