Keep up with Tony here:
Tony Westermark born in sweden 1986.
As a kid i always wanted to be a rockstar, no thougths of being something else. I knew that music was my thing from the start. When I heard Kiss for the first time at 9 years of age I couldn´t believe how great it was. I got my first drumkit when I was twelve and started out with my first band right away. They introduced me to Metallica and the music blew me away. We played Metallica covers for a couple of years and got into heavier stuff like Pantera etc. I first discovered death metal when I was about 15 and got more serious with my playing, not just jamming as it was with the band.
Soreption started out 2005 and we entered the Sidelake Studios late 2006 where we recorded a 4 song EP together with Chris and Tommy Rehn from ANGTORIA.We immideately got a management deal with their company Virtual Symphony Productions and they are right now searching for a decent label for us. We´ve just started writing new material for our fullength album and will soon also start rehearsing for future gigs.
Tony Westermark Interview:
SDM.com: How old were you when you started playing?
Tony: 12 years old, and got serious with the practicing around 15.
SDM.com: Did you play in a school band or any drum corps?
Tony: No
SDM.com: Ever take any lessons?
Tony: Yes, from when I was 16 to 18.
SDM.com: Who are your top 5 influences?
Tony: It´s so hard to pick just five, there´s just to many skillful players, and they are good at different things. To name a few: Flo, Haake, Vitek, Donati and I have to say Ulrich for the stage performances, starquality, energy and of course the early inspiration.
SDM.com: Assuming that influences doesn’t mean favorites, who are your favorites?
Tony: I guess it´s pretty much the same, and a lot more.
SDM.com: What are 5 CD’s in your personal rotation?
Tony: I only have 3 at the moment:
And then you´ll beg – Cryptopsy
Whisper supremacy – Cryptopsy
Destroy Erase Improve – Meshuggah
SDM.com: Do you have a favorite brand of drums or cymbals?
Tony: For the drums, I just know that I like the maple sound, can´t name a particular brand. For cymbals I like the Sabian AAX, great crashes especially!
SDM.com: Do you have any pre-show rituals?
Tony: I always warm up with practicepads, building up the energy ´til I´m ready to go on stage.
SDM.com: If you could give one piece of advice to younger drummers, it would be…
Tony: Remember, the important thing is to play and/or write the great music you love and most important -Have fun !!. Don´t just sit and practice, trying to be the fastest or whatever.
SDM.com: Who gave the best live performance you’ve ever seen?
Tony: Another tough question. Don´t think I can name just one that´s the best I´ve ever seen. But the most recent I saw half a year ago, Cryptopsy, where Flo was awesome!
SDM.com: If you had to stop drumming, what else would you want to do with your life?
Tony: I would play another instrument or maybe front a death metal band doing the vocals.
Big thanks to you! And I must say, a great site!
