Nolan Weber

Keep up with Nolan here:

I started drumming at a pretty young age, when my dad bought a Tama Rockstar with all Paiste Dimensions cymbals for me and my 3 older sisters to fight over. I ended up playing it the most, because my dad had a P.A. system in our garage that was screaming loud, and would always play songs for me to drum along to… which got me heavily into classic rock and traditional heavy metal at a young age. After playing in a few middle/high school cover bands over a span of time, I joined my first actual metal band, Antemortem. But it didn't last long or do anything. I did some drumming in a bar/buttrock cover band, and even sessioning for one opening for Foghat, but time went on and I got really sick of playing nothing but covers and it did lead me to join my old Black Metal act Typhon. That band had pushed my boundaries speed-wise, and made me practice fast blasting and double bass for long periods of time.

We had put out a few recordings, and played a lot of killer shows and somewhere over the span of time I met and befriended Drew Frerking, and started my band Garoted with him – which led to him joining Typhon for a brief period until the bands' collapse. I have done a few shows, and even a tour, filling in for Kansas City's speed metal avengers Vanlade. I now am currently full time with Garoted, and a Rock band called Dream Endeavor. I love playing metal that pushes my abilities to the extreme, and I hope you enjoy what I put out! Keep metal alive! And UP THE IRONS!

Nolan Weber Interview:

SDM: How old were you when you started playing?

Nolan: I was pretty young, like around 9 or 10. Not very serious about it until I was around 14.

SDM: Did you play in a school band or any drum corps?

Nolan: Yes, but I played Saxophone for the longest time due to there being too many drummers in my class, haha. I finally was in Jazz Band for 1 year in high school, on drums.

SDM: Who are your top 5 metal influences?

Nolan: Scott Travis from Judas Priest, Lee Harrison from Monstrosity, Richard Christy when he was with Death and Control Denied, Stormblast from Thunderbolt and Infernal War, and Proscriptor from Absu.

SDM: Who are some other of your favorites?

Nolan: Dennis Rondum, Nils Fjellstrom, Duane Timlin, Mike Smith, Dennis the Menace, Gene Hoglan, Kevin Talley, and Tony Laureano!

SDM: Let us know 5 CD's that are in your current rotation

Nolan:

Opus Eponymous by Ghost
Dust to Dust by Heavenly
Conflagrator by Infernal War
Millennium by Monstrosity
Knights of The Cross by Gravedigger

SDM: What do you do to warm up before a show?

Nolan: Warm up my neck up with any other bands playing, sit in a chair and stomp along to 'Fast as a Shark' by Accept, and try to do my fastest hyper blast possible with marching sticks, haha.

SDM: Do you read music? Regardless of answering yes or no, please tell us how it might have effected your playing?

Nolan: I can read music, but I don't really need to with the music I play. I jot down notes, of course, but that's for really difficult riffs/song structures.

SDM: Can you tell us about the gear you use?

Nolan: I'm playing a Tama Starclassic Performer kit with 10", 12", 14" toms and two 22" kicks. My snare is a Slingerland 12×7 Copper snare, and I have used it pretty exclusively for the past 4 years! I swear by Axis pedals and Remo heads up and down. I try to stay around Paiste cymbals, because I've never had a bad cymbal by them, and I started with  off with them!

SDM: If you could give one piece of advice to young drummers, it would be…

Nolan: Learn as much as you can from people, be humble, and HAVE FUN! Don't stress about being the best! This is METAL!

SDM: Who gave the best live performance you've ever seen?

Nolan: For large shows, I'd say Judas Priest when I was 14 years old. I almost broke out crying when they came on with "The Hellion/Electric Eye". For smaller shows, hands down I'd say Absu. I saw them with Immortal, and they were a power trio on the tour… with Proscriptor at the front and center of the stage. He's a freaking beast, and is very charismatic! Plus him doing vocals along with it really is breathtaking.

SDM: Aside from drumming, what else do you like to do?

Nolan: Hang out with friends, party it up, and going on road trips out of town when I can afford it!
