Keep up with Noah here:
Starting out listening to mainly black metal I knew that I wanted to be in a band and play music whether it be professionally or just in a local bar, and I knew I wanted to play metal. So after I realized how little drummers there are in the scene and that they can basically choose what kind of bands they'd like to be in since there more rare than other players, I took up drums. I practiced my ass off and started a black metal band with my friends called Nihil. Pretty much a joke band, simple Burzum, Mayhem, Darkthrone type of stuff. After black metal pretty much bored me because I overkilled it I started getting way into the grind scene. Bands like Carcass, Napalm Death, Nasum, Assuck, Pig Destroyer etc. I then started a technical grind band (I learned blastbeats and wanted to show em' off! haha) called Brocas Aphasia which was a 3 piece where I screamed and played drums, matt the guitarist did the lower vocals, and a friend named Rah was on bass. It was fun and interesting and we got a real good response from kids into grind and death metal. We released a limited vinyl called "Girl In The Green Burqua" which were very proud of. Although it was fun, for whatever reason the passion to play grind/death faded. Some friends of mine and the guitarist matt from Brocas then decided we wanted to capitalize on the Darkest Hour, Dark Tranquility, At the Gates melodic death sound that was popular about a couple years ago. We started a band called Till Your Heart Stops, played alot of shows recorded a decent demo but due to personal issues with a few of the members disbanded after about a year. Which was sad because that was a real fun thrash melodic death band that people seemed to enjoy.
Currently I'm playing in a brutal death metal band called DeSade. There's actually alot of elements of music in this band but in particular its death metal. Which is by far my favorite band i've played in. Its funny because even in the other bands i've played in I knew deep down if I ever had the chance to play some brutal death metal i'd really love to do that. Quincidentally again Matt the guitarist from Brocas and Till Your Heart Stops is in this band as well. Also Ryan the singer from TYHS. Later we found Adam our bassist from mutual long term friends and After only a month or two of looking we found a lead guitarist who we were all real impressed by, who is honestly the best guitarist i've played with and inspires me every time we play. The objective with this band is to play brutal/technical music but at the same time keep melody. As far as drumming, I'm going for alot of different sounds lotst of brutal chug moments as well as left and right handed blasts moments. The thrash elements from TYHS is There to where we usually plug in the melody part. Bottom line is we are really stoked to be playing in a band where all know we love what were playing and are proud of it. Playing shows currently just in San Diego and Los Angeles we hope to do a mini tour and venture out in a few months. Noah Cody Interview:
SD.com: How old were you when you started playing?
Noah: I was about 11 or 12 when I started taking lessons. I took lessons for one year, and my family at the time wouldn't allow me to own a set so I quit. I then picked up playing again about 7 years later and have been playing ever since. So i've been playing for about roughly 4 years.
SD.com: Did you play in a school band or any drum corps?
Noah: No I didn't, I definitely regret not doing that.
SD.com: Ever take any lessons?
Noah: Yes I took lessons for a year, loved it so much but then realized my step father would never let me own a set and decided to quit.
SD.com: Who are your top 5 influences?
Noah: Kevin Talley in particular his works in Dying Fetus, Misery Index, and Soils of Fate. Brian Harvey of Pig Destroyer. Ricky Myers from Disgorge (SD). Tony Laureno of Nile and Jimmy Chamberlin of the Smashing Pumpkins.
SD.com: Assuming that influences doesn't mean favorites, who are your favorites?
Noah: My favorite drummer of all time is Nicko McBrain of Maiden. He just has his own style that really gives Maiden a unique sound kind of a galloping type playing that no other drummers really seem to grasp in my opinion. Kevin Talley though is by far the most amazing drummer in my opinion. He hits hard, keeps it simple when its suppose to be, and gets amazingly technical at just the right parts.
SD.com: Let us know 5 CD's that are in your current rotation
Noah: Circle of Dead Childrens new cd, Dying Fetus-Destroy the Opposition (at all times rotation haha), All Shall Perish-Hate Malice Revenge, Vomit Remnants-Indefensible Vehemence, and At The Gates-Terminal Spirit Disease. I like to get a variation so i'm fresh on ideas so usually grind cd, death metal cd, melodic death cd, and some newer deathcore type stuff.
SD.com: Do you practice any specific rudiments or combo's regularly?
Noah: Not really, latley i've been working on hyper blasts. Looking forward to mastering it. Learning some of the fills in Fetus songs is fun to.
SD.com: Do you have a favorite brand of drums or cymbals?
Noah: Definitely, Pearl drums are a must and Sabian cymbals
SD.com: Do you have any pre-show rituals?
Noah: Drink water, eat a good meal, warm up on the drum pad, and never play drums the day before which is just a precaution I like to take to not overwork myself. Although I realize touring days off between shows are rare. Probably not a very good ritual
SD.com: If you could give one piece of advice to young drummers, it would be…
Noah: Take drum line, lessons, don't cover songs and go by the cd, practice everyday if possible, don't get frustrated!
SD.com: Who gave the best live performance you've ever seen?
Noah: Best drummer i've ever seen live would definitely be Adam the new drummer who replaced Kevin from Misery Index. He has the chops to not only play Talleys stuff flawlessly but the stuff he has written for Misery Index's new cd is just amazing in my opinion. Best live show all together though would probably be Suffocation/Morbid Angel show a few years back. That shit was intense!
SD.com: If you had to stop drumming, what would you want to do with your life?
Noah: If I had to stop drumming I think the other hobby i'd really like to do more with my life is skateboard. I've always skated but since i've picked up drumming more seriously over the years its kind of faded and I miss it. Being a professional skateboarder would rule.
