My name is Nestor Carrera and I started to play drums at 15 years old in a friend’s band, without any wills to be “a drummer” for life, but that game started to be serious. After that I was invited to play in some local rock/metal bands, but started my own project called ‘Sinnsyk’ in 2009, fortunately it was over last year (2012). Today I’m part of a death metal band called ‘Escarnium’. We have 5 years on the road, one full length album released and 2 European tours completed. I just recorded for my new progressive metal band called ‘Banshee’ that will be released early 2014.
Nestor Carrera Interview:
SDM: How old were you when you started playing?
Nestor: At 15 I sat in front of a drum kit for the first time in my life, but I started to be a drummer at 16.
SDM: Did you play in a school band or any drum corps?
Nestor: Never…
SDM: Who are your top metal influences?
Nestor: Flo Mounier, Richard Christy and Tomas Haake are my influences talking about metal. I can say that I admire the work of many others, but they are not exactly influences for my playing.
SDM: Who are some other of your favorites?
Nestor: Thomas Pridgen, Travis Orbin and Dave Weckl are my top 3 influences in life. David Garibaldi, Aaron Spears, Dennis Chambers, and Benny Greb also have their spots.
SDM: Let us know 5 CD’s that are in your current rotation
Nestor:
- Oceans of Slumber – Aetherial
- Intronaut – Habitual Levitations
- Tesseract – Altered State
- Suffocation – Pinnacle Of Bedlam
- Alice in Chains – The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here
SDM: What do you do to warm up before a show?
Nestor: Usually 10 minutes of single strokes with full power.
SDM: Do you read music? Regardless of answering yes or no, please tell us how it might have effected your playing?
Nestor: I read tablatures because of Guitar Pro (my best teacher ever), but I am not a full on theory drummer. I never took classes or something like that and I learned 90% of what I know by myself at home.
SDM: Can you tell us about the gear you use?
Nestor: I have no endorsements at the moment, but I usually use a very simple kit: only (1) 10″ tom and (1) 16″ floor tom, a couple of Paiste Alpha Crashes [I love their tone], a Z custom ride cymbal that I also love it’s definition and tone, and some effect cymbals but nothing special.
SDM: If you could give one piece of advice to young drummers, it would be…
Nestor: Practice the most as you can! If you know that you can’t play something yet, keep trying at home! But it’s much better if you show a well played simple grooves and rudiments to the people, than totally messed up and forced fast progressive drumming.
SDM: Who gave the best live performance you’ve ever seen?
Nestor: Dobber Beverly with Infernal Dominion
SDM: Aside from drumming, what else do you like to do?
Nestor: I am a photographer and graphic designer for a living.
