Lyn Jeffs is a 21-year-old, highly acclaimed extreme metal drummer from the UK, who has been playing actively in metal since 2002. His passion for drumming is of course coupled with a high drive within the metal scene, where Lyn has promoted shows, worked within the design, and also for Plastichead Distribution.
Last year, Lyn gained a Grindstix endorsement and is currently teaching drum lessons alongside working in his bands.
Since releasing his first major recording in 2007, where he played for both Ingested and Crepitation, Lyns’ career has gone from strength to strength; with a festival performance at Mountains of Death, Switzerland, to Ingested receiving their debut album record deal. More recently, and Lyn was asked to session for renowned metal band Annotations of An Autopsy on their European tour alongside The Acacia Strain and Knights of the Abyss. His capability as a drummer meant it was proposed that he joined the band on a permanent basis, and the band’s plans to tour the world and write new material are quickly coming into play.
Lyn Jeffs Interview:
SD.com: How old were you when you started playing?
Lyn: I began playing when I was 12 on my Dad’s very old and rusty Premier 1960’s kit.
SD.com: Did you play in a school band or any drum corps?
Lyn: Yeah, my first ever band was in school with some friends where we started out playing a load of covers like Green Day, Blink 182, Nirvana etc… It was a lot of fun and that’s how I got into playing live shows. In England, you don’t really get any sort of Drum Corps but I’ve heard they’re a great way for kids to get into percussion.
SD.com: Ever take any lessons?
Lyn: My Dad was the first person to get me on to the kit but he didn’t really give me lessons, just a few pointers. I did jam quite often with a drum teacher from my high school for a year or so who was a very skilled drummer, he really gave me a sense of aspiration towards drumming.
SD.com: Who are your top 5 influences?
Lyn: Buddy Rich, John Bonham, Derek Roddy, Paul Bostaph, and Tony Laureano.
SD.com: Assuming that influences doesn’t mean favorites, who are your favorites?
Lyn: At the moment, Alex from Despised Icon, because he’s so incredibly tight – it’s ridiculous. John Longstreth from Origin is also amazing. I like drummers who are innovative who can play to their ability and play to it well.
SD.com: Let us know 5 CD’s that are in your current rotation
Lyn: Despised Icon – The Ills of Modern Man, Gamma Ray – Blast from the Past, Whitechapel – This is Exile, Inveracity – Extermination of Millions, and Ulver – Perdition City.
SD.com: Do you practice any specific rudiments or combos regularly?
Lyn: I always warm up with practicing paradiddles, really gets your wrists loose for playing single/double strokes. I also enjoy practicing the American 5-Stroke Roll.
SD.com: What is your favorite part of your drum kit?
Lyn: Axis Longboard Pedals – ever since I’ve bought them they’ve made a huge impact on my live playing.
SD.com: Do you have any pre-show rituals?
Lyn: I always warm up with single/double stroke and paradiddles, as well as stretching my wrists and I also eat a banana.
SD.com: Tell us a little about the bands you are in.
Lyn: Ingested is in the same vein as bands like Devourment, Suffocation, and Dying Fetus- mixing ultra-brutal death metal with crushing breakdowns, groovy slams, rapid blasting, and technical riffs. Annotations are a contemporary death metal band that takes influence from bands such as Despised Icon, Hate Eternal and Devourment. The music is much more mid-paced with hints of an old-school style to contrast with our modern-edge. It works and we like it!
SD.com: If you could give one piece of advice to young drummers, it would be…
Lyn: Always practice no matter where you are or whether you have a kit or not. It’s so easy to fall behind on personal performance with drumming.
SD.com: Who gave the best live performance you’ve ever seen?
Lyn: Drumming-wise, I’d have to say Alex from Despised Icon, he has blown me away both times I’ve seen the band! As for a band, Dark Throne at Wacken 2004 was immense!
SD.com: If you had to stop drumming, what else would you want to do with your life?
Lyn: Drumming is my life! But I’m sure if I couldn’t drum I would be involved in music in one way or another – as well as traveling the world.
