Keep up with Ken here:
My name is Ken Bedene. I'm 20 years old. I play drums for the bands Abigail Williams and Aborted. The first death metal band I played with was called Blood Of Cain with my father on vocals. We played around locally and opened for a bunch of bigger bands. I then got the call to play with Abysmal Dawn as a touring drummer. One of the tours I did with Abysmal Dawn was the Conquer & Cursed tour, where we opened for Abigail Williams. They lost their bass player early in the tour, and I offered to fill in for them, as I play many different instruments. Samus (Ex. Abigail Williams, Decrepit Birth) was playing drums with Abigail Williams at the time, and I played bass up until the end of that tour, when they asked me to play drums. I gladly accepted!
In 2010 we recorded the album 'In The Absence Of Light' on Candlelight Records, and I continue to tour the world with the band. Abigail William's singer/guitarist Ken Sorceron also plays with Aborted, and when it came time for them to support their new EP, which had Dirk (Soilwork, Warrel Dane, Scarve) on drums, he was unable to tour due to commitments with Soilwork. Sorceron recommended me, and I was asked to play the drums on that tour. I have since been asked, and accepted the position as Aborted's full-time drummer, with a new album to be recorded in April of 2011.
Ken Bedene Interview:
SDM: How old were you when you started playing?
Ken: Hmm, well i've always been into drums but I didn't really get into them until the age of 13. I started my first band a few months later at the age of 14. I'm 20 years old right now, so it hasnt been too long haha
SDM: Did you play in a school band or any drum corps?
Ken: Nope… Though I probably would've benefited from either of them. At the time all I wanted to do was play drums in a metal band haha
SDM: Who are your top 5 metal influences?
Ken: At the moment I have been learning a lot from my friend/teacher Mike Heller, He's easily one of the best drummers i've ever seen play and had the pleasure to meet and learn from. I'm trying my best to get better fast but getting better isn't something that should be rushed.
Some other drummers that influenced my younger years would have to be Gene Hoglan, Richard Christy, and George Kollias.. I always loved Hoglan's double ride placements, and Christy's natural feel and soul to his drumming. I really try to add those to my playing along side with the speed and endurance of Kollias, also when I go to the higher speeds 250bpm + I use the swivel technique like Kollias… There's so much you can learn from other musicians.
SDM: Who are some other of your favorites?
Ken: I usually try not to listen to too many drummers alone because I usually like to enjoy music rather than talent and musicianship but recently i've been listening to the cd Traced in Air by Cynic and holy fuck! Sean Reinert is one of the most expressive drummers i've heard in a long time… I know he's a great metal drummer but I like to think he's not a metal drummer but more as just a really fucking good drummer. I also enjoy watching gospel drummers on youtube when i wanna know why i need to practice haha
SDM: Let us know 5 CD's that are in your current rotation
Ken:
Master of Puppets – Metallica
Lawless Darkness – Watain
Traced in Air – Cynic
De-Loused in the Comatorium – The Mars Volta
Diadem of 12 Stars – Wolves in the Throne Room
SDM: What do you do to warm up before a show?
Ken: I like to set up my drums in a corner and put a hoodie over the toms and a practice pad on the snare and just jam away until the venue tells me to shut up, then I walk around pissed off.
SDM: Do you read music? Regardless of answering yes or no, please tell us how it might have effected your playing?
Ken: I can read a little bit of music.. only basics though… even then I can stumble very easily. I've never had the need to know how to read music so far luckily.
SDM: Can you tell us about the gear you use?
Ken: I love Gear!!!! I usually never use my own drum set for many reason, I have a Mapex pro m 6 piece drum set that I never play usually. It's not at my house so I never get to practice either. Touring is the only time I get to play usually so I like to make the most of it.
At the moment I'm using a drum set provided by Mike Heller. It's a custom 4 piece shell pack he put together made up of all maple keller shells. I use a 12×7 Mapex black panther snare. As far as cymbals go i'm currently using 16" and 17" Meinl Soundcaster Fusion Crashes, 22" Zildjian A Custom Ping Ride, 11" Sabian Aaxplosion splash, 13" Zildjian K/Z Dino Beat Hi Hats, 13" Sabian AA Fusion Hats 18" Meinl Rock China, 14" Wuhan China, 7" Mike Heller Turk Masters Signature bell, only because it saves space from using 2 rides (used as a second ride because zil bells are for core bands)
SDM: If you could give one piece of advice to young drummers, it would be…
Ken: No matter what anyone tells you, Joey Jordison is not the best drummer in the world… On a serious note, just be your own drummer and find your soul in drumming
SDM: Who gave the best live performance you've ever seen?
Ken: Eek! I really can't remember any performances that stick out that much from others…
SDM: Aside from drumming, what else do you like to do?
Ken: I am very into wish listing gear on musicians friend. I love eating mass amounts of food. I play guitar, waste my brain away playing video games, I'm always online checking my fantasy football team… I might like that more than drums @_@ , I also enjoy wasting my time on virtual drum creators
