Keep up with JP here:
It seems like I've been playing on the drums since I was born. According to my parents, I was always hitting literally everything, trying to make sounds with what I could find. After a failed attempt at playing the guitar, my mother got me a small drum set at the age of 5. It wasn't until I was in the 3rd grade in which my friend actually pressured me into going into the band and playing the snare. We played everything from the triangle to the bongos! After learning my basic rudiments, I was playing the snare at school. Around this time, I was given an actual drum set. It was a "Century" brand and I destroyed that thing until I was a Sophomore in High School! Freshman/Sophomore year(s) was also when I was getting into Metal so I formed my first band, which was a Thrash/Death Metal band. Playing Rock and Jazz was able to make this big transition into extreme music easier for sure. Any who, I was able to save up some money and thanks to mum (again), I bought a Premier Cabria Fusion kit with a Zildjian starter pack and a set of Pearl Eliminators! I finally had a set that I was proud to take out to shows and felt very inspired to bang on it everyday. So you could say that I was about 13 or 14 when I was getting into the extreme side of Metal. I felt like I was so far behind other drummers in the scene but I was thankful to have a good sense of timing and my rudiments down. I began to just play them as fast as I could. Playing out at a young age helped a lot. I would stand right on the side and watch other drummers play and say to myself,"Ok, I need to learn this but not this, this is good, eh I don't like that." Just picking up little things along the way. I'm 22 now and I still do that. I feel very happy with what I have achieved and with how my I perform on the set yet I still practice like if it was day 1. My goal as a drummer is to be a World Class Drummer and Musician.
JP Andrade Interview:
SDM: How old were you when you started playing?
JP: My mum says I was about 4 or 5 when I first starting playing. She had gotten me a Mickey Mouse drum kit and I destroyed it. It wasn't until I was 8 or so when I started to learn rudiments and beats in school.
SDM: Did you play in a school band or any drum corps?
JP: School Band. I played in the Jazz/Rock band. I was supposed to play in the Jazz Ensemble in High School but I didn't follow through with that.
SDM: Who are your top 5 metal influences?
JP: Oh man, this is tough. So many amazing Metal drummers. I would have to say (in no particular order) ; Gene Hoglan, Tomas Haake, George Kollias, Inferno, Hannes Grossmann.
SDM: Who are some other of your favorites?
JP: I can go on for hours haha. Danny Carey, Gavin Harrison, Marco Minnemann, Brann Dailor, Benny Greb, Sean Reinert, Martin Lopez, Ronald Bruner Jr. Dennis Chambers, Virgil Donati, Teddy Campbell, Dave Weckl, Carter Beauford.
SDM: Let us know 5 CD's that are in your current rotation
JP:
Mastodon – Leviathan
Dave Matthews Band – Crash
Porcupine Tree – The Incident
Chick Corea Elektric Band – Beneath the Mask
Mutiny Within – Mutiny Within
SDM: What do you do to warm up before a show?
JP: I try to stretch out as much as possible for 5 or so minutes then I proceed with warming up my right and left hands with a metronome. I do singles, doubles, and paradiddles. I do the same with my feet then I combine the both and try to do some independence exercises.
SDM: Do you read music? Regardless of answering yes or no, please tell us how it might have effected your playing?
JP: I can read some simple stuff but definitely not enough to get me by with having a chart only. I feel that if I knew some or even a lot, it would take my playing up to a higher level and make it easier to learn difficult pieces of music.
SDM: Can you tell us about the gear you use?
JP: Right now I'm using a 4 piece Gretsch Renown Maple with a Gretsch 6×13 Mahogany snare, all Zildjian cymbals (been playing Zildjian since day 1), Vic Firth, Trick Dominator Pedals (I was very fortunate to win them from the Sick Drummer Contest!). And finally, for shows I use a Roland TD-4 with a RT-10K kick trigger.
SDM: If you could give one piece of advice to young drummers, it would be…
JP: practice, practice, and PRACTICE! You have to put in the time and effort into your practices. LOVE YOUR PRACTICES! Listen to as much music as possible and play along to a lot of cds. Go to a lot of shows too and watch other drummers play and get inspired. Most of all, have fun 🙂
SDM: Who gave the best live performance you've ever seen?
JP: Danny Carey with TOOL during their first run of 10,000 Days. It was so amazing I wanted to cry haha. Gavin Harrison with Porcupine Tree recently in Radio City Music Hall was amazing as well, you heard everything absolutely perfect. Marco Minnemann with Necrophagist was so killer!
SDM: Aside from drumming, what else do you like to do?
JP: Does air drumming count? haha. I actually play soccer a lot, been doing that since I was a baby haha. I love to travel even if I'm not on tour, trying different foods, and meeting new people. Learning in general!
