I got my first kit in 2002 when my friends and I wanted to start a band. I always wanted to play the drums after listening to metal. I didn’t know how to play at all, so I took up lessons, but stopped going after two lessons. I felt it was a waste of money at the time. I decided to teach myself by listening to lots of metal and playing with my band. Gradually, I got it down and started to love it madly.
In 2005, I started playing shows with Blood Asylum and also joined the band Sikfuk. Throughout the next couple of years we played quite a few shows and recorded the second full length Sikfuk album, entiltled “Teabagged at Birth”. We had great a great response from the album and continued playing shows. In 2007, I joined a black metal project called Feldskorn. We recorded a demo that summer, but had to put the project on haitus, with several of the band members going off to college. In October of 2007, after parting with Sikfuk, I began practicing with Blood Asylum again, and I started playing a lot more on my free time.
Now it’s 2008, and I’ve been playing with some sick bands, such as Prevailer, Blood Asylum, and Invidiosus (which will be recording an album in late 2008/early 2009). I love playing music and I’m interested in what the future holds for me. I know one thing is for sure, that I’ll always be playing drums.
Jake Lemay Interveiw:
SD.com: How old were you when you started playing?
Jake: I was 14 years old. I got my kit for Christmas, that was the greatest gift ever!
SD.com: Did you play in a school band or any drum corps?
Jake: No, I wanted to but I sang in choir for a few years, haha.
SD.com: Who are your top 5 influences?
Jake: I have to say Kevin Talley (Dying Fetus days) first off, Raymond Herrera, Tim Yeung, KC Howard, Alex Pelletier.
SD.com: Assuming that influences doesn’t mean favorites, who are your favorites?
Jake: Man there are a lot but I like, Dennis Chambers, Dave Weckl, Tim Yeung, Sam Applebaum, Oh can’t forget Thomas Haake!
SD.com: Let us know 5 CD’s that are in your current rotation
Jake: Veil Of Maya – A Common Man’s Collapse
Born Of Osiris – New Reign
Defeated Sanity – Psalms Of The Moribund
Nothingface – Violence (sweet album!)
Meshuggah – Destroy Erase Improve
SD.com: What do you do to warm up before a show?
Jake: I usually start stretching my arms and legs. Maybe grab my sticks and beat on my lap or a table. That’s about it.
SD.com: Can you remember a night you think was your best playing ever? If yes, when and where?
Jake: Hmm, I can remember playing with Sikfuk in Tulsa, Oklahoma and the crowd was chanted my name to play a solo. I pulled one out of my ass, and I thought it turned out pretty sweet!
SD.com: Do you have a favorite brand of drums or cymbals?
Jake: My first kit was a V sereies Mapex and I loved the sound. Now I have a 7 piece Mapex Pro-M, it sounds redic! For cymbals I use almost all Zildjian A Customs. I love the fresh sound of those cymbals. But I wouldn’t mind picking up a few Meinl cymbals.
SD.com: If you could give one piece of advice to young drummers, it would be…
Jake: Work long and hard, never give up. Give yourself time to become the drummer you want to be.
SD.com: Who gave the best live performance you’ve ever seen?
Jake: I really enjoyed the band Covenance when they came with Daath, Dying Fetus, and Psyopus. The drummer was sick!
SD.com: If you had to stop drumming, what would you want to do with your life?
Jake: Life would suck a little more. But maybe take up guitar lessons, and work towards a getting a good job
