I have been drumming almost everyday since I was 12 years old. After taking some basic lessons I started playing songs from the bands I used to listen back in the days, overall I liked to play Slayer songs. I started listening more brutal music with the time and eventually I got myself involved into brutal death style.

I formed my first serious band Gory Delivery in 2006 to play brutal death metal music. In 2008 we recorded a 3 track demo produced by ourselves. The same year I started playing in Cerebral Effusion. After playing some shows in 2009 we recorded the album “Impulsive psychopathic acts” which is being released by Comatose music in 2010.

In 2009 I also played with Haemophagia as a session drummer, playing a couple of international shows. Nowadays, I’m recording the debut album with Gory Delivery and preparing the live set with Cerebral Effusion to show the new album internationally.

Eihar Unamuno Interview:

SDM: How old were you when you started playing?

Eihar: I think I was 12 years old, but I didn’t have a kit until I was 14, then I started playing more seriously.

SDM: Did you play in a school band or any drum corps?

Eihar: No. I took lessons in the beginning about basic drumming and techniques but that’s all.

SDM: Who are your top 5 metal influences?

Eihar: Ricky Myers, Lille Gruber, Tony Laureano, Tim Yeung and John Longstreth.

SDM: Who are some other of your favorites?

Eihar: More drummers I like are Chad Walls, Kevin Talley, Darren Cesca, James King or Dave Haley. I like intense drummers, for me it’s not just technique and playing ultrafast. There are some drummers that are very fast and tight but I don’t get the same feeling listening to them, especially playing live.

SDM: Let us know 5 CD’s that are in your current rotation

Eihar:

Septycal Gorge “Erase the insignificant”
Putridity “promo”
Insidious Decrepancy “Extirpating omniscent certitude”
Despondency “Revelation IV”
Immolation “Close to a world below”

SDM: What do you do to warm up before a show?

Eihar: I warm up for half an hour before the show. I take a pad and play single strokes with a metronome if I can, start slowly and increase the speed gradually. Same with the feet. I try to be motivated and concentrated for the show to have a good feeling.

SDM: Do you read music? Regardless of answering yes or no, please tell us how it might have effected your playing?

Eihar: I learned when I was a kid but now it’s almost forgotten. I usually work with midi tabs to write and memorize my drum parts, I think it’s easier to understand and also for the communication with the rest of the band. Anyway, it’s very important to play, record and listen carefully when the song is finished because sometimes tabs can be very different from reality. It’s also very important to get the feeling from each band member, so tabs are ok as a tool but they are useless with no rehearsals.

SDM: Can you tell us about the gear you use?

Eihar: I have a Pearl Session Custom with 4 toms (12”, 13”, 14” and 16”). Regarding cymbals I don’t have an specific preference, I use different brands, if I like the sound there’s no problem. I like to use bigger cymbals to have more dense atmospheric sound and smaller ones to crash. I use Axis longboards and Vic firth extreme 5AN sticks, which are a little bit longer. I trigger the bass drum both playing live and in studio.

SDM: If you could give one piece of advice to young drummers, it would be…

Eihar: I’m quite young so maybe I’m not the most indicated to give advices but from my experience… play the music you like and don’t go for the money because then drumming becomes a simple job. Practice, be patient and constant with the work. It’s very important to play with dedicated musicians and with the same point of view as you.

SDM: Who gave the best live performance you’ve ever seen?

Eihar: Suffocation and Defeated Sanity.

SDM: Aside from drumming, what else do you like to do?

Eihar: I would like to travel around the world but I don’t have all the time and money I would like to have… I go to the mountain when I can, the area in my country is fuckin awesome!
