A dark but decent concert video…
EB was born in Uppsala, Sweden 1985.He was a drummer like anyone else when he was around 16-17 years old, played alot of pop/rock stuff. Pretty soon, a friend of his, brought a double-pedal to the rehearsal and then he was hooked. EB did an atempt with a band called Leech, who played a mix between Death Metal and Nu-metal, pretty soon he got bored and wanted a bigger challenge. He began playing together with his two cousins, later on the Leech singer was added. This was the birth of DEVIANT. Some live shows were executed before the debut demo was recorded in August of 2003. The debut demo, simply entitled Deviant was unleashed in November 2003 and led to an instant deal with the Italian label The Spew Records in early 2004. During 2004, the band spent the first half of the year playing shows and planning the debut album. The second half of the year was spent writing material for what was to become Larvaeon. The debut album, Larvaeon, was recorded during December and early January ’04/’05 in EAR Studios (where also the demo was recorded). Fredrik filled in on the bass spot after the recording and was publicly announced in March of ’05. 2005 was spent spreading the Larvaeon…
After some liveshows, and incredible reviews of the album, Deviant had troubles holding it together. The truth is nothing much has happened; due to members being countries apart and suffering from multiple physical troubles, DEVIANT had been lying dormant over the past six-or-so months. Before the cessation DEVIANT did record four songs in EAR Studios – three brand new songs and one Nasum cover yet again with Carl Vikman. The new songs from the recording session in January this year will be released on a small CD by partners in infection Nuclear Winter Records. The artwork for the MCD release is currently being created, and will be presented upon completion. The CD’s format will be 3″. The title of the MCD is set to ‘APATHYPHUS’, and the three new songs display the array of meticulous insanity and diverse brutality DEVIANT has been striving to compose refined. New titles include ‘To Give Ends’, ‘Apathyphus’ and ‘Weak and Withered’. Unfortunately, due to lingering physical problems and inactivity we are not able to play any live shows as of now and hope we can return to anyone and everyone we have had to deny when the time comes. DEVIANT has already started to write on the new album…
In the mean time and under the time DEVIANT was active, EB has done some sessionwork for different bands. Penile Suffocation, The Unkinds and SanktErik, are some of that bands. EB´s known trademark are very fast hyperblasts, and he will continue to do that as long as he can.
E.B Interview:
SD.com: How old were you when you started playing?
EB: I started out when i was about ten years old, playing with pencils on pillows, and trying to copy Roger Taylor in Queen. Soon I got my own real drums, and played some nirvana and metallica. When i started to play deathmetal, I think i was about 17 years old, I tried to play as much of Flo Mounier´s work. Yeah, he was an big inspiration.
SD.com: Did you play in a school band or any drum corps?
EB:: No, sadly no. Im totally self-learned, just by practicing my ass off.
SD.com: Ever take any lessons?
EB: Nope, I have given lessons to some kids, but I have never taken any, but i would love to that so i can become more diverse.
SD.com: Who are your top 5 influences?
EB: Flo Mounier, Jojo Mayer, Mike Mangini, Roger Taylor and Tommy Lee.
SD.com: Assuming that influences doesn’t mean favorites, who are your favorites?
EB: haha no, I think the influences pretty much sums it up, but besides them, Christian Eigner and Bobby Jarzombek. They´re top notch!
SD.com: Let us know 5 CD’s that are in your current rotation
EB: I’m a pretty soft guy when it comes to music. I don´t listen to alot of death metal in my “spare time”, but as of now: Depeche Mode – Music For the Masses, Cathedral – The garden of unearthly delights, Muse – Black Holes and Revelations and Grave – As Rapture Comes.
SD.com: Can you remember a night you think was your best playing ever? If yes, when and where?
EB: That must have been my latest show (but that was a while ago) 28.01-06 in Uppsala my hometown with Deviant. The place was overcrowded, and people broke their noses, and just hurt themselves in general. It was such an awesome gig. I remeber when we played the last song for the night, and our singer Alx stagedived out in the crowd, and when he got back upp on the stage, he was covered in other people blood! So metal! haha
SD.com: Do you have a favorite brand of drums or cymbals?
EB: When it comes to drums, i love pearl drums. Some solid quality in that shit. I use an Gibraltar rack, cause it´s so much lighter than the pearl. I
use Iron Cobra´s when it comes to pedals. When it comes to Cymbals, I use Sabian all the way. There is nothing like Sabian.
SD.com: Do you have any pre-show rituals?
EB: No, not really, except a really good workout before i go up. It´s a drummers worst nightmare to get cramps and hurtings one song in on the set, it´s the worst thing that has happened to me anyways. So, full workout on 30-45 minutes, then im ready to rock.
SD.com: If you could give one piece of advice to young drummers, it would be…
EB: I’m young myself haha. But if I would give any advice to young drummers it would be to NOT begin playing metal. Start with standards, take lessons whatever. I pretty much started out with metaldrumming and then your´re pretty much stuck in it. Im working on the basics now. If you know the basics, you will have much better understanding of metaldrumming and drumming in general. Im really tired of these kids who runs around saying they are the fastest drummers in the world and can´t even play a simple rockbeat. I was like that myself so that´s why I’m suggesting to go back to basics.
SD.com: Who gave the best live performance you’ve ever seen?
EB: Flo Mounier, both times I´ve seen him, just awesome, allround drummer. But it is alot of drummer that impresses me. George Kollias off course for being such an badass drummer and such a down to earth guy, very friendly. Kai Hahto is pretty interesting to see aswell.
SD.com: If you had to stop drumming, what would you want to do with your life?
EB: I would live a calm life with friends and family and loves ones, steady job, steady social life and steady income. Sounds easy huh? But it isn´t
really that easy to maintain all that. Everyone who has tried and suceeded or failed, knows.
