Dustin Perle

Dustin Perle- (a.k.a Mordergeist) 27 years old

Born: August 27th, 1980.

Hometown: Frazier Park, CA  and surrounding areas (The hills… they DO have eyes)

Band: RECIPROCAL-  Hollywood, CA U.S.A

Dustin Perle was exposed to all varieties of music as far back as he could remember. Alex of Van Halen, Nicko McBrain of Iron Maiden, and Tommy Lee of Motley Crue were the first of many drummers he remembers inspiring him to play drums.

He began listening to thrash metal at the age of 8 and credits Lars Ulrich of Metallica, as well as Dave Lombardo of Slayer for influencing him to become a metal drummer.

Dustin has jammed with world renowned metal acts such as legendary veteran thrash pioneers Slayer and norwegian extreme metal artist Grimfist (featuring members of Deride and Immortal) before helping to form what is now Reciprocal in 2007.

Dustin Perle Interview:

SD.com: How old were you when you started playing?

Dustin: I think every drummer starts on pots and pans as a lil’ shit. I remember my receiving my first pair of drumsticks at age 8, but I remember starting to beat on the furniture with wooden spoons way earlier than that. I guess make-shift furniture combinations and desks at school were all I really had until my parents bought a drum kit for me at age 10. Needless to say, my neighbors were not happy.

SD.com: Did you play in a school band or any drum corps?

Dustin: Yes… kinda. I did participate in a music class in 4th and 5th grade. Mr. David Silman taught me simple drum rudiments that actually prepared me for my first drum set. I later decided to try music band/marching band as an elective because they had a drum kit to my dispose. Think about it? We were bustin’ solos for crowds at lunch breaks and jamming Led Zeppelin and Sepultura songs during band class! It was just too much fun, but I hated the marching part… and almost failed music for deciding to not do it anymore. At least I can say I tried it… it just wasn’t my thing to do back then.

SD.com: Who are your top 5 influences?

Dustin: Hahaha!  Whoa… I have heard hundreds of great influential drummers over my 18 years of playing. It is hard to narrow it down to 5. Most of my influences came from the ‘ol school days. Other than my friends Christmas Collazo and Paul Cassarino, the following drummers that made the biggest impact on the direction of my path to drumming are :

LARS ULRICH
DAVE LOMBARDO
PAUL BOSTAPH
VINNIE PAUL
NEIL PEART
TERRY BOZZIO
FLO MOUNIER

SD.com: Assuming that influences doesn’t mean favorites, who are your favorites?

Dustin: Besides the above influences… my favorite drummers also include:

JOHN BONHAM, DAVE WECKL,  MIKE PORTNOY,  SEAN KINNEY, TIM ALEXANDER, DANNY CAREY, VIRGIL DONATI,  CHARLIE BENANTE, NICK MENZA,  IGOR CAVALERA, GENE HOGLAN, MIKE SMITH, PETE SANDOVAL, STEVE ASHIEM, PAUL MAZURKIEWICZ, SEAN REINERT, JOHNNY KELLY,TOMAS HAAKE, DAVE CULROSS, TIM YEUNG, HORGH, JAN AXEL BLOOMBERG  a.k.a HELLHAMMER, MARCO MINNEMANN, GEORGE KOLLIAS, DEREK RODDY, HANNES GROSSMAN, MARCO PITRUZZELLA, VITEK, JOHN LONGSTRETH, JAMES KING, JUSTIN ROUSSELLE, INFERNO,  DENNIS RONDUM, NILS, K.C. HOWARD, CHRIS PENNE, THOMAS LANG,  DAVID GARIBALDI, DENNIS CHAMBERS, BUDDY RICH, BILL STUART, VINNIE COLAIUTA, JACK DEJOHNETTE, MANU KACHE, ZAKIR HUSSEIN, TRILOK GURTU, SANTA, CARLTON BARRETT, WFD Record holders etc, ect., ect… way too many to
mention.

I can’t keep up with the amount of sickness out there now, and I dig all of it!  I learn of new drummers and bands on a weekly basis that totally freak me out!!!  Some have been around for a long time and I am just finding out about them. I saw this kid named Bernard Galane at the Baked Potato the other night… WTF was that!! Sick bastard!”

SD.com: Let us know 5 CD’s that are in your current rotation

Dustin: I play so much different stuff… jazz, hip-hop, rock, reggae..  my ipod has everything from Aborted to Zappa. But… I can say that there are albums I never get tired of hearing and play often. So- here are some examples of albums that never leave my rotation.

CIRCLE JERKS- “Group Sex”
NECROPHAGIST- “Epitaph”
KARL SANDERS- “Saurian Meditation”
BOZZIO, LEVIN ,STEVENS – “Black Light Syndrome”
PINK FLOYD- “The Wall” and “Dark Side Of The Moon”

SD.com: What do you do to warm up before a show?

Dustin: I do some stretching and like most drummers… I am backstage with my practice pads and pedals warming up my hands and feet before performing. I do some basic rudiments as fast and as evenly as I able to do.

SD.com: Can you remember a night you think was your best playing ever? If yes, when and where?

Dustin: Yes… when I was 21, I was requested by Kerry King of Slayer to come jam with them in their rehearsal studio here in Southern California on St. Patties Day of 2002 . They were searching for drummers following Paul Bostaph leaving the band. After we played 11 songs together, each of them shook my hand and told me they were very impressed with my performance. That had to be one of the greatest feelings of accomplishment I’ve experienced as a drummer. It was an honor just to have had the chance to meet and jam with them. I was their choice amongst some extremely bad ass drummers… whom I’ve totally respected for years… had Dave decided to not commit as a permanent drummer.

SD.com: Do you have a favorite brand of drums or cymbals?

Dustin: I am open minded, but I do prefer to use PEARL DRUMS with a PORK PIE snare and most of all my cymbals are SABIAN. People often ask about my pedals and I use AXIS pedals.

SD.com: If you could give one piece of advice to young drummers, it would be…?

Dustin: If they found Sick Drummer, they are already on the path to learning extreme drumming. Everything they need is here and all the drummers are gonna say the same things to them that I would. My best advice is to put the damn X-Box down and go be a drummer …RIGHT NOW!  Seriously… you must not anything stop you from drumming, if thats what you want to do. Protect your ears as well.. or your finished!

SD.com: Who gave the best live performance you’ve ever seen?

Dustin: Every drummer I mentioned in this interview has completely blown my mind live… but, I will say as far as solo drumming is concerned:

TERRY BOZZIO- Live at Musicians Institute in Hollywood California around 1999… WHOA!  Its still to this day some of the most amazing drumming I have seen!  Independent solo drumming at its finest! You will never see a drummer play more melodically or poly-rhythmically! A microcosmic orchestra… no doubt!  His kit alone is a divine creation.

VIRGIL DONATI- He made me wanna crawl back to the woodshed after I saw him do a solo live for the first time with Planet X years ago!! I had seen his videos previously and knew I was in store for a shock! Sick and twisted double bass over odd-meter signatures at fast bpms while spinning and flipping drumsticks! Befuddling… to say the least… a must see!

SD.com: If you had to stop drumming, what would you want to do with your life?

Dustin: I don’t know exactly what I would do if I had to stop drumming? What I wouldn’t do is give up in life or be unhappy doing whatever it is that I decide to do. Life is way too short… I am still shocked by the death of Vitek. I can say he was living his dream and everybody should do the same if you want to be happy. Always find something to do that fulfills you. There is way more to life than drums!  I would get off my ass and make something happen for myself!

Honestly, I think I would chill with all my family and friends more. I would spend lots of time watching all sorts of good movies and t.v. shows I never seem to have time to watch. Maybe I would go back to school? I could take a vacation to Morocco or New Zealand with the money I saved on all the sticks and cymbals I break the shit out of. Rick Allen of Def Leppard never gave up when he was supposed to stop drumming. Maybe I would find the all important answers as to what the hell a “Def Leppard” is anyways!!  W.T.F?  HAHAHAHA!

In conclusion:  I would like to thank John, Randy, Ian and all the cool heads at Sickdrummer who help and work very hard at making this website all possible. It is an honor to be on this site with so many awesome drummers. Look for my band Reciprocal on the SDR compilation and soon on Unique Leader Records.  We are in the process of completing our first album that should be out sometime in the later part of 2008 (produced by Michael Keene of The Faceless).
