I’ve been drumming for about 5 years now. After hearing some double bass work in a song, I just loved the sound, and I knew this was something I wanted to do. After starting Endemise with my brother in the basement, I’ve just put a ton of effort into constantly trying to improve myself. It was cool being a younger musician in the metal scene around town, and I think it was really beneficial to have such a network of influences from a young age. I always tried to just play as much as possible, and I try and view each new song we write as an opportunity to test my limits and push my abilities one step further. There’s always going to be setbacks and difficulties, whether it be drum-specific, or band related; I always just try and stay positive and focused.

David Sauve Interview:

SDM: How old were you when you started playing?

David: I was going into eighth grade so I must have been about 13 years old.

SDM: Did you play in a school band or any drum corps?

David: No, I was just doing my own thing.

SDM: Who are your top 5 metal influences?

David: Zbigniew Robert Prominski (Behemoth), Sam Paulicelli (Former Abigail Williams), Hannes Grossman (Obscura), Shannon Lucas (The Black Dahlia Murder), and Trey Williams (Dying Fetus).

SDM: Who are some other of your favorites?

David: George Kollias (Nile), Justin Rousselle (Beneath The Massacre), Alexandre Pelletier (Despised Icon), Kevin Lane (Whitechapel), Jon "The Charn" Rice (Job for a Cowboy).

SDM: Let us know 5 CD’s that are in your current rotation

David: Abigail Williams – In The Shadow Of A Thousand Suns, Septic Flesh – Sumerian Daemons, The Black Dahlia Murder – Deflorate, Behemoth – Evangelion, Annotations Of An Autopsy – The Reign OF Darkness.

SDM: What do you do to warm up before a show?

David: Find a chair or any other padded object for a practice pad if I can because I never remember to bring one, and then just standard warmups

SDM: Do you read music? Regardless of answering yes or no, please tell us how it might have impacted your playing?

David: I can read music to a certain extent but I can read and write drum tabs quite well.  A lot of Endemise’s songs are written onto Guitar Pro 5 and I use it to tab out the drums I write for each song.

SDM: Can you tell us about the gear you use?

David: I use a 5 piece Sonor Force 3005 kit with maple shells.  Mostly Sabien cymbals but a few Zildjian and Wuhan.  For pedals I use 2 Pearl Demon Drives. I have a roland trigger setup for my bass drums.

SDM: If you could give one piece of advice to young drummers, it would be…

David: Practice is the most important thing if you’re trying to get good.  Also if you’re writing drums always write things that you cannot play quite yet and then force yourself to learn them.  That’s how I improve myself with every song I write.

SDM: Who gave the best live performance you’ve ever seen?

David: Hannes Grossman of Obscura.  I saw them last year and I still can’t comprehend what I witnessed.

SDM: Aside from drumming, what else do you like to do?

David: Relax, play video games, eat. Whatever.  Sleep is always nice.
