Brett Batdorf

Originating from Southern California, I am Brett Batdorf and I hope to take extreme drumming (and drumming as a whole) to a new level.  With the internal drive and dedication of a music maniac, I am currently in the works of carving and creating pathways that will hopefully soon be followed by the masses. I am not here to replicate any style or technique, rather compose my own.  It is my belief that the only way boundaries are gonna be broken, is by comprising your own system or performance.  To me, too many styles nowadays are unoriginal. It’s a continuing growth of a straight line, with few up coming hills and given time… I promise not only to me, but to everyone listening/watching, that my live and studio performances will most definitely be remembered and hard to ignore. –Brett

Brett Batdorf Interview:

SD.com: How did you meet the guys from the Faceless and what was it like recording with them?

Brett: My buddy told me they needed a drummer, so i caught them at a local show out here in southern cali. After seein them, i thought i would give it a shot, and i enjoyed it, but later on realized it wasnt my scene nor what i wanted to persue as a career. Recording is always a blast for me, i love playing to clicks, and expieimenting in the recording process haha. I had a good time.

SD.com: When did you start playing drums?

Brett: I was actually always interested in drums, since i was born, but also, i was way into bass as well and always wound up being the damn bass player for my bands! haha. It wasnt until late 2001 when I received my first drumset and joined my first band as a drummer.

SD.com: Do you play in a school band or any drum corps?

Brett: No, never did.

SD.com: Have you ever taken any lessons?

Brett: A few, but i like to learn on my own, rather getting taught. I’ve given many lessons tho : )

SD.com: Who are your top 5 influences?

Brett: I am really into people having there own style. I try not to listen to to many different drummers, rather, i try to create my own style. Alot of metal drummers feed of each others playing and copy, and you cant tell the difference between anyone. I like it when u can tell who the drummer is by listening only. To me, thats mastering the art of drums. But to list a few: Max -Krisiun Richard Christy- Death, Iced Earth, Burning Inside Tim yeung- Vital Remains, nile, Hate Eternal, Decrepit Birth, Devine Heresy Gene Hoglan- Death, Strapping Young Lad

SD.com: Assuming that influences doesn’t mean favorites, who are your favorites?

Brett: Max Kolesne of Krisiun

SD.com: Let us know 5 CD’s that are in your current rotation

Brett: Grimefield ( my band haha ) Krisiun, Enya, Old Mans Child, Darkness Burns Through

SD.com: Do you practice any specific rudiments or combo’s regularly?

Brett: I have an electronic set here and practice single stokes, double strokes ect. whenever i can. But, on the other hand, me having an extreme DAILY workout schedule is VITAL for my playing/ keepin the chops up.

SD.com: What is your favorite part of your drum kit?

Brett: Double bass! I can hit up to 300 bpm 16 th’s and throw in insane double bass patterns that have gotten me alot of regignition

SD.com: If you could give one piece of advice to younger drummers, it would be…

Brett: Try to create, and DONT EVER GIVE UP. DONT LISTEN TO YOUR PARENTS, ALWAYS STICK WITH IT. ( unless theres no hope. . . .hahaha)

SD.com: Who gave the best live performance you’ve ever seen?

Brett: Krisiun \m/

SD.com: Aside from drumming, what else do you do with your life?
