Aantar Coates Interview:

SD.com: How old were you when you started playing?

Aantar: First I would like to say thanks for recognizing me as a  drummer and for this interview. It is an honor! I first started playing when I was 2 or 3 years old. My dad was a drummer and he started me off with just the snare drum and hi-hat. I seriously started playing when I was in high school with a band called Dark Land named after a song I loved from a band called Necronomacon

 

 

SD.com: Did you play in a school band or any drum corps?

Aantar: No. I really hated school and wanted nothing to do with there system. I would hang out with the skaters because I was big time into BMX ramp riding. They got me into DRI ,Kreator, Exodus, Slayer, Whiplash, Possessed.

 

 

SD.com: Who are your top 5 metal influences?

Aantar: Witchhunter, Dave Lambardo, Tommy Lee, Lars Elrich , and Alex Van Halen.

 

 

SD.com: Who are some other of your favorites?

Aantar: Terry Bozzio, Dean Castronova. Doc and Pete.

SD.com: What do you do to warm up before a show?

Aantar: I stretch and warm up on my practice pad. Drink water.

 

 

SD.com: Do you read music? Regardless of answering yes or no, please tell us how it might have effected your playing?

Aantar: Yes I can read music thanks to my dad. It helped me understand the Terry Bozzio instructional video. I would some day like to write all of my drums out then post it on the internet so other drummers can what I do.

 

 

SD.com: Do you have a favorite brand of drums or cymbals?

Aantar: I use Paiste Signture, Rude and Vision cymbals. I also play D-drum’s Diabilo – Death Metal kit. I also use a Tama Power Tower rack that I bought from Pete. I also use a Ludwig 16 lug/8 inch x15inch snare. It’s the same snare used on the Terrorizer World Downfall record and it was used on Morbid Angels Alters of Maddness and Blessed are the Sick record’s.

 

 

 

 

SD.com: If you could give one piece of advice to young drummers, it would be…

Aantar: Don’t forget that the drummer is the backbone of the band so stay out of trouble with the police because some countries might not let you in to play your show if you have a bad police record. Its not always how much you practice it’s what you practice. Practice slow drumming and the speed will come in time.

 

 

SD.com: Who gave the best live performance you’ve ever seen?

Aantar: Dave Lambardo Reign in Blood tour.

 

 

SD.com: If you had to stop drumming, what would you want to do with your life?

Aantar: I would build a killer  half pipe in my back yard and ride everyday on my Matt Hoffman Condor BMX bike. I would have Highest air blasting competitions with friends. I really like video editing so I would get with some cool writers and make a crazy Death Metal movie. I also play guitar and keyboards. I really enjoy writing riffs with my band and collaborating with them. I can show them a guitar riff and they will make it  a million times better
