Subrick's Picks: A look At Up & Coming Drummers – Pick 7

Round and round and round she goes. Where shall she stop? I don’t fucking know. What I do know however is that I am the portly typist himself known as Subrick, bringing you another round of insane in the membrane drumming for your auditory, visual, and possibly sexual pleasures. Please excuse how batshit this article may be, dear readers. Rick is writing this at one in the morning, and he tends to get a little bit zany when hopped up on Coca Cola and Sbarro’s meatball sandwiches. In the blog portion of the article, the recording for Pandora’s Toybox went off without a hitch. I most likely will be playing live for them on the 15th of July in Northampton, Massachusetts at the Macabre Marionette Theater with the Happy Hour Burlesque troop as onstage dancers (yes, this is not your standard rock band). I have uploaded to my Youtube channel a montage of the recording session.

For your chance to be featured: All you have to do is post a video of you drumming to YouTube, Vimeo or whatever video site you prefer, and embed the link on this website in the SD Videos section. Nothing more, nothing less, but you do need to be a registered member of our site to post.

There are three categories on which I base my selections: Playing Ability, Production Value, and Kit Sound. All three are pretty straight forward, but here’s what I specifically look for with each category.

Playing Ability: I look to see if a player is technically sound; timing is good, endurance and power are up to par, among other, more miniscule things.

Production Value: I prefer to watch video from a good quality camera, or studio quality. By studio quality, I don’t mean the greatest production sound ever recorded. I classify studio quality as a drumming performance recorded with microphones and/or triggers. Electronic kits are very much encouraged (especially when using less conventional samples). Now, if you have sound quality that isn’t as good, that doesn’t mean you won't be included in my selection process. Everyone is eligible to be featured.

Kit Sound:  One of the most important characteristics! We all have read Eyal Levi’s article about why drum performances are always sound replaced these days. For those who haven’t, the basic gist of it is because drummers don’t know how to tune their drums. Considering that many drum videos I see on YouTube involve players that have really bad sounding kits, it seems rarer and rarer that drummers actually tune their drums. Meet all three of these criteria, and you have a shot to be featured. You could be playing the most radio friendly Disney pop imaginable, but if I feel your video meets these criteria, you could make the front page.

And now, with all that said and done, onward to the picking. What kind of picking? It’s not nose picking. It’s not ass picking. It’s my pick of the week, by golly!

This week was tough! It came down between the video I ultimately chose and a video by my good friend Alex Lancia of Lecherous Nocturne. But, despite how great of a player Mr. Lancia is (in a cheap plug for them, make sure to go buy Myth Manifest when it comes out sometime in the future. Modern death metal that doesn’t suck!

I decided to go with JT Penderville and his drum tracking video of the song Chasing the Keeper by his band Dethlehem. Dethlehem are, as they describe, an epic melodic death metal band. The “epic” here is manifested in that they are very much inspired by medieval imagery, as well as having elements of battle & war centric power metal in their music. JT, who goes by the name Overlord Brom when performing with Dethelehem (as well as wearing a very kickass knight helmet), is another metal player who plays on a four piece kit. From what I can see in the video, he uses Sabian cymbals, or at least Sabian crashes. Since this is a drum tracking video, the audio and video quality is top notch. The thing that drew me to this video however is how tasteful Mr. Overlord Brom is. The thing about melodeath that I enjoy is that the music is much more tasteful than normal death metal, and while there’s still a lot of blasting and double bass to be found in here, there’s also slow passages with groovy playing. Not to mention, he isn’t just playing blasts over and over again no matter if they fit or not, unlike many death and black metal bands today.

Now go buy Dethlehem’s debut album, The Ghorusalem Codex, Vol 1. – Enthroned Upon a Spire (seems like these guys went to the Bal-Sagoth School of Long Titles) on iTunes!

That shall be it for this installment of Subrick’s Picks. Before I go pass out from not having any sleep for the last day, I’ll implore you to go subscribe to my Youtube channel, follow me on Facebook and Twitter, and to go like Pandora’s Toybox on Facebook. Until the time of next, Subrick out!
