SDM Welcomes Eyal Levi Of Daath!

We would like to welcome Eyal Levi of Daath and look forward to reading his column! 

 

So you’ve booked some studio time.  Let’s say for the sake of this conversation that you’re going to record a five song EP.  Hopefully you’ve given yourself at least a good month or two to prepare, because you’re going to need it.  Let’s be idealistic: You want to have the most slamming, brutal, tight, in the pocket recorded drums ever, and you want to do it with minimal studio magic.  That means you don’t want your performances edited to hell and back.  You don’t want your drums sampled into drum machine land.  You want your recording to be you at your best, allowing the rest of your band to shine.  On top of that, you may even want the music buying public, as well as the drum community at large to recognize your skillz.  Let’s be realistic: You can only afford three or four days in the studio and you want to achieve in that time what typically takes weeks, and thousands of dollars more than you are capable of spending.

It’s possible to achieve your idealistic goals but it all depends on how much and how well you handle your advance preparation, as well as how much attention you pay to the right details when you are actually in the studio.  Over the next few months my column Is going to start you from the beginning, in the practice room, and its going to take you all the way to the final mix.  I’m going to give you tips, tricks, techniques, and methods to go about preparing for the studio, practicing your parts, recording, editing, and mixing drums so that you can make the most out of a small amount of time. My column will be featured in the magazine, as well as on this website.

I’m excited to be sharing my knowledge with you guys.  Some of my favorite drummers are also contributors and it’s great to get a chance to throw in my advice.  Take it for what it’s worth.  I’ve played with and recorded some of the very best and some of the very worst in environments ranging from basement studios and shithole bars, to top of the line studios and massive festival tours.  Hopefully out of all that, I’m going to share at least a few concepts that help bring you closer to the music you hear in your head, and feel in your heart.  Cheers! – Eyal Levi
