As many of you likely know I’m a pretty big proponent of electronic drums and furthermore to any technology as related to the creation of music.  As a drummer who is currently in the midst of writing a new album I’m also interested in picking up my game drum-wise.  I’ve spent almost my entire drum career dedicated to developing strength, endurance and speed while trying to compliment that with writing good songs and trying not to “over play” the drums if you know what I mean.  After all it’s about creating good songs not trying to impress other drummers with how fast you can play open stroke rolls or what BPM you can claim to blast at.  As I’ve contemplated the drum parts for my band’s new album my thoughts are that I want to keep up the blazing double bass and blast beats while trying to be more creative and begin to introduce more progressive hi-hit and ride work to my style to bring a more developed and mature favor to my drumming without losing the anger and intensity that I’ve always excelled at.

In the very beginning stages of my drumming I played a six piece Ludwig kit but since the age of fourteen I’ve played on nine piece kits or larger.  Since I always played on such large kits I’ve always been especially interested in things like x-hats, cable hi-hats and drop clutches.  It can be extremely challenging to have a large drum set with a ton of cymbals and still get them close enough together to be practical as well as efficient for playing at fast tempos.  Therefore I was EXTREMELY happy when I found out that Pintech was now offering what is to my knowledge, the first electronic hi-hat with a drop clutch on it!  Now I can blaze thirty-second note double bass patterns with a closed hi-hat on electronic drums and still return later in the song to play some tasty progressive beats incorporating cool, open and closed hi-hat.

The Pintech Visulite hi-hat has an integrated hi-hat controller which means that you can use it on any regular hi-hat stand or cable-hat!  This simply means that the controller which sends information regarding the position of the top and bottom cymbals is built directly in between the “cymbals” themselves.  The hi-hat cymbals are made of acrylic (ie Plexiglass, Lucite, etc.) and are 13” in diameter.  The hi-hats are available in twelve colors and are also available as both single and dual zone pads.  I’m pretty happy with these hi-hat cymbals and I’m already thinking about how I’m going to come up with the additional funds to buy a second pair along with a cable-hat for my cage!  I also can’t wait to ditch my old hi-hat stand for a quicker one.  If there is any one drawback to these Visulite hi-hat cymbals I’d have to say that there is slightly less rebound on padded acrylic than there is on metal but that is about it.
