I remember walking the crowded paths of the Winter NAMM show back in the early nineties and stumbling upon the most amazing looking drum rack I'd ever laid my eyes on. It was a black drum rack/riser all in one and the bass drums were suspend in mid air! I was blown away by what I was seeing but the reality for me back then was that I was young and broke. I took the black and white tri-fold brochure off the counter that read RAM Products and hoped I'd be lucky enough to own one of them some day.
I was recently lucky enough to have been able to track down Tony Ramirez the creator and builder of that rack/riser that I once happened upon and found out his products were still in production but now going by the name LEVEL. Tony now has six basic types of racks he offers as a standard but says, "I customize all the racks to a certain degree" to fit various bass drum sizes for instance and says, "If someone has an idea for a custom rack, I can work from their drawing to build it. In that process I will also make it as portable as they want."
The Level rack/risers ship in one box which tells you that they are amazingly portable and reasonably light, especially considering that they are both a rack and a riser. I asked Tony about any standard options that are offered and he says you get, "your choice of riser height, the powder coated color of your choice and expanded metal or carpet flooring." It's said that looks are the first impression people have of you. Level racks look unique, insanely impressive and professional and those are exactly the impressions you want people to have even before you ever sit behind the kit, bottom line.
