Hey Everybody! The piece transcribed by Bill Ricciardelli is a sort of pre-chorus to Into Eternity's chart-bustin smash hit "Diagnosis Terminal ". I decided to do the transcription after many questions about what exactly is going on.
Now keep in mind the idea behind this is not speed, this is not a blast beat as hopefully most of you can see by looking at it. In fact, this may not physically be anything new for many of you, but mentally it's a concept that requires an understanding that many drummers may be unaware of. The concept can be looked at as a beat displacement.
The melody consists of a measure of 11/8 and 13/8. This happens twice. Ex- 11/8 13/8 11/8 13/8.
For the first bar of 11/8, I play a broken 16th note pattern incorporating most of my drumset beginning with the cymbal and snare. The figure also includes some hand-foot combinations and takes up the entire bar. For the first bar of 13/8 I play the same broken 16th pattern only instead of playing through the entire bar and coming in on 1, I come in an 8th note earlier on beat 13 with my bass drum and crash cymbal starting my illuded "4/4" groove creating the 8th note displacement.
The melody never changes. I still count the original 11/8 13/8 time signatures. Beat displacing is a great rythmical concept to practice for those looking to add to their mental capacity and develop more technical facility behind their drumset. Try playing all your usual beats starting them in different places, it can make for some interesting stuff! Enjoy!
