My name is Julia Geaman and I have been playing drums for twelve years and subbing/teaching for six. I currently teach full time at Long and McQuade and Rufus Drum shop in Vancouver. I play with Vancouver thrash band Revenger and Instrumental Neo Classical-Metal band Alchemy Chamber. I have also filled in for TheGolers and Massive Scar Era as well. In the past year, I have also started doing clinics and have filmed a couple of lessons with Drumeo. I have recorded ‘The New Mythology Vol.1″ with Revenger and a soon to be released album with Alchemy Chamber.
I put together some simple rudiment stickings on the hands to play over top of a consistent double kick single pattern. Lining up the hands and feet without flamming is something I have been working on to improve for a long time and it’s still not perfect but these patterns have helped me keep my balance and lock in the unison hits between my hands and feet even while improvising. The patterns on the hands are:
R L R L
R R L L
R R L R R L
L L R L L R
R R L R R L R L L R L L
All while playing a single double kick pattern underneath.
Once those are comfortable I experiment by randomly adding doubles only on my right hand, then my left and then combining them. Beyond that you can orchestrate it around the kit, maybe focusing on just 2 groups of drums or only moving one hand around until it feels more comfortable and natural. It takes some time maybe but can be fun once you get the hang of it.
