Cameron Fleury is an accomplished drummer with solid experience in the Canadian metal scene. You may know him by his involvement with the London, Ontario-based band, Terrorhorse. This video demonstrates the skank beat. It’s derived from the punk and thrash metal genre and is most commonly played as a drum beat in extreme metal. In a skank beat, the drummer plays the right hand and bass drum in accordance with each other. It’s basically a faster and harder hitting 2/4 polka beat.
There are a few different variations you can play the skank beat, and I exhibit a couple of these in this video. If you’d like to hear the skank beat played in musical context, I’d suggest checking out the all mighty Slayer. Have fun with this one and rock on!
Practicing drums for the past 15 years Cameron has studied jazz, funk, and world rhythms. He is best known for his hard-hitting and blast beats, a common theme in heavy metal. Cameron has put his musical talent to work filling in as a drummer on international tours and professional studio recording sessions. Currently, he is perfecting a unique sound with a variety of projects. Cameron is a dedicated drummer always willing to learn and successfully teach others tricks of the trade. Cameron also teaches drums at a local Long and McQuades music store.
