Today marks twenty years since the untimely passing of “Crazy” Larry Hawke, a death metal drummer best known for his work in the South Florida death metal band, Hateplow. Larry passed away from smoke inhalation during a house fire, when he went back into the home to attempt to save the family pet poodle, Kelly.
Kyle Symons, the singer of Hateplow, wanted to do something special to remember Larry on this day, so he sent us some never before heard raw tracks of Larry in the studio during the tracking of Hateplow’s 1998 Full-Length, ‘Everybody Dies.’
When we asked Kyle about Larry and some of the other drummers who have since played with Hateplow, here’s what he had to say: “I know that Dave Culross and Derek Roddy were always around with Larry at the warehouse… Larry would always talk about them (good things of course) when I would drop him off at home after practice. I can’t remember if Tony Laureano was around or if that was after his passing. I think Tony was still in Orlando doing Naphobia at the time.”
These tracks are raw drums, no triggers, no editing, no nothing… just straight mics played along to a scratch guitar track.
So, thank you Kyle and Rest Easy drumming brother Larry (1/15/1972 -5/24/1997), you are gone but never forgotten and sorely missed by those who knew you best.
