Many of you have been wondering what Samus Paulicelli has been up to, since his last Decrepit Birth tour with Origin in mid-2012. We caught up with Samus and asked a few questions and were also able to get this great Dimmu Borgir drum cover for all of you to enjoy. Gotta love Barker-era Dimmu drumming, especially from the first record he was on with the band. Stay tuned for more videos from Samus in the near future.
SDM: We know you are attending school right now and Decrepit Birth has been getting fill-in drummers for touring. Is this a permanent move, or will you return to the band? If not that band, will you be looking to join another touring band after your schooling is complete? Are you still with Eliminator?
Samus: Right now, I'm just concentrating on school, full time. But I have no intention of leaving Decrepit Birth or Eliminator. I also have no intention of joining any new bands. I can not yet say what the future will hold. All I have been doing is studying as of late. However, music will always be a big part of my life. Even though I can't play any live shows for a while, I am still available for session work!
SDM: What made you decide to go back to school? What are you studying?
Samus: These days, it is very hard to make money by playing music full time, unless you are in a very very popular band. I need to have a consistant source of income. I am studying mostly business and mathematics. Statistics, Calculus, Marketing, Economics, Accounting, that kind of stuff. I am looking to become either an Actuary or an Accountant. I am very good with math.
SDM: How long will it take to complete your degree?
Samus: I should have my bachelor of commerce within 3-4 years. After that, there will be another 2-10 years of tests (depending on which major I choose).
SDM: Why a Dimmu Borgir cover?
Samus: Why not? Haha, I really love the Puritanical album. Nick Barker's drumming on that album is soo sick and has been a huge influence on my playing style for many years.
SDM: What's the hardest song you've ever had to learn by any band?
Samus: Hmmm, well there have been many hard songs over the years but I would have to say that the Decrepit Birth songs were the hardest ones to learn. They are extremely technical and some of the odd-timed parts were very hard to figure out at first. Not to mention, they are extremely fast. I would also have to say that I spent a good amount of time in middle school learning Dream Theater albums. That was some fun stuff.
SDM: I know you have more videos on the way, can you tell us what they'll be?
Samus: I can not say too much, but I will tell you there will be a few Decrepit jam sessions, some Eliminator videos, some Samus originals, and a lot of drum covers. The drum covers will mostly be metal songs, but there will be a few wacky ones in there that will throw people off, hehe.
SDM: Are you up for any cover suggestions from fans?
Samus: I wish I was able to do that, but all the videos have already been filmed. I still do not have a drum kit where I am living in Canada, so I had to film all the videos when I was visiting my family in New Jersey last week. But don't worry… there are a lot of videos coming. If I upload a new video every couple of weeks, there will be enough videos to last a few years. Hahaha! Subscribe now! 😛
SDM: Where can people stay in touch with you?
www.youtube.com/66samus is definitely the best way to keep up with what I'm doing. I'm not on Twitter or Instagram. My Facebook is only for close friends and family. I do however make occasional posts on the Decrepit Birth and Eliminator Facebook pages.
