Update interview with Mauro Mercurio of Eyeconoclast (ex: hour of penance)
SDM: First of all, can you please tell us about your decision to leave Hour of Penance?
Mauro: Well,I won’t take long! While we was recording “Paradogma” I already knew that this record would be of great importance to the band. I mean, more touring than before and a prestigious label, which means more efforts and dedication. Unfortunately my time is limited because of my studies, so I couldn’t stand this kind of life. I would have limited them heavily with these problems, and the band doesn’t deserve it, after all the efforts we had made. I wish them the best and I’m sure they’ll keep alive the name of the band. For 11 years I gave everything to this band and I hope they keep going far for a long time.
SDM: What made you then decide to join another band right away, Eyeconoclast?
Mauro: The Eyeconoclast were my second band. I have been playing with them since 2003, so they are not a new project. We’ve already done an album, some demos and now a new EP. They are in my same situation, so there aren’t any time problems. With them I can also diversify my drumming style, because the pieces are so various and have several influences. There are a lot of blastbeats, up tempos, mid tempos and some technical stuff. I felt the need to change and to make my drumming mature, and with Eyeconoclast, I can realize everything I’ve mentioned before.
SDM: On the new Eyeconoclast EP, did you write all the drum parts or were they already written? If you wrote them all, how long did it take? If you did not write them, who did?
Mauro: The main composers of the band are the two guitar players: Stefano Morabito (also owner of the 16 th cellar studio) and Alessio Cosenza. They compose the songs outlines and they put in a reference drum line. Subsequently, they send me the work and I change the drumming parts as I like, in order to arrange it better to the song. So, all in all I can say that I’m the writer of my parts. Often I give a hand in the structure of the song. We’ve always worked in this way and the result is excellent. I’m in perfect agreement with them, it’s just like three minds in one.
SDM: Can you tell us about the studio you recorded in? Who produced and how long did it take to track everything?
Mauro: The Ep was recorded, mixed and mastered at 16th cellar studio by Stefano Morabito(our guitar player). His work is great! For me, it’s definitely the best Italian recording studio for this kind of music. I’ve recorded in this studio all the stuff with Hour of Penance and Eyeconoclast, and also Oracles of Fleshgod Apocalypse. We recorded the EP in 2 weeks. During the recording session the vocalist Emanuele left the band due to the different musical tastes. For this reason Carlos Mastantuono (ex vocalist and former member) re-joined the band as session vocalist.
SDM: Please tell us about all the drum gear used on this recording. Drums, cymbals, heads, pedals and any electronic gear/settings you can share.
Mauro: I used a Pearl Master Studio with birch shells and a Tama Starclassic snare, also birch. I love birch! About the cymbals I used: Charleston Z custom, Ride Ufip Rough series, Crash Stagg Furia 16, Zildjan A custom 16, Stagg DH 18, china Sabian AAX 18, splash Avedis Zildjan. Axis A longboard pedals and Vic Firth 5A sticks. Roland triggers for the bass drum and Evans drumheads. The sound is fucking killer!
SDM: What is the goal with Eyeconoclast? Will you be their touring drummer, if they decide to tour?
Mauro: Our goal is to play and compose our music even better. We put passion into this. Let us know and hope that our music can be appreciated as much as possible. I’m a permanent member of the band so I'll be available for all the future shows.
SDM: When will you be done with your Schooling? and what are your plans for after School?
Mauro: Hopefully soon! Ahah the university is killing me! But in Italy the so-called "piece of paper" is essential if you want to have a stable job. It’s very difficult to find a job in Italy! Abroad, the situation is not so bad. College will be replaced by a job, but I’ ll continue to play as I've always done. It’s my passion, and I can not live without music!
SDM: Any other news to share?
Mauro: Our new ep is finally out! It's called “Sharping Our Blades on The Mainstream”. It contains three songs completely listenable on our websites. The first reviews are going great, so we hope to continue in this way. I’m really proud to notice that people who have always supported and appreciated me for my works with Hour of Penance are still interested in me and my music. My fans are awesome and for me this is everything. I hope you enjoy our lastest EP. In the meantime, we’re already writing new songs for the upcoming album. Whoever follows me will no longer remain absolutely disappointed. Stay tuned!
