The new Daath was recorded by Jason Suecof and Mark Lewis (they've done Bury your Dead, Devildriver, Chimaira) down in Florida. Finally, I have been able to capture a killer drum sound with them! Utilizing real acoustics, like recording Dying Fetus's Destroy the Opposition. So this drum sound isn't all fake like 90% of the other stuff these days.
Daath just released new music this past week and I am very stoked about the great response we've gotten. I wasn't really a part of the last Daath record, but I helped write this entire record. It really took me back to the DF days, when I could really connect with other writers who are musically capable and able to handle an asshole drummer.
The new Daath drum parts are very similar to my old school drumming except, in my opinion, more innovative. I have always been a drummer who writes drum parts to complement, not copy, guitar riffs. This is why I didn't write well with Chimaira. They simply wanted me to copy the riffs which is boring and overdone these days.
Now more than ever, I have taken to a very unique writing style. It is, however, very very subtle. It's like the first main riff in Sepultura's Chaos A.D. You may think the kick drums follow the riff, but they don't… The beat is different and and adds a ton of groove by complementing the riff. To notice it, you must listen to the riff and then turn off the music. Next, hum the riff in your head and imagine what beat YOU would write to that same riff. Now, turn the music back on and see if the beats match up. Sometimes they will, but mostly they won't. This is not the case when you listen to Fear Factory or Chimaira, which are more straight forward drum parts. Although I added as many good drum parts I could in Chimaira, my drumming on the self titled album is pretty average IMO.
