Studio Tips:
I prefer to tune my toms pretty low, but for some songs we tuned the drums slightly higher just to get a more
aggressive/uncontrolled tone. Usually in the studio the most important thing is to tune the drums where they sound absolutely best and that’s also dependent on the room and how they’re mic’ed.
Drummer Comments:
Before when I have recorded albums I find it hard to get in the right mood and get the adrenaline pumping, I much more prefer to play live than in studio. This time we decided that the rest of the guys were with me in the studio room playing along all the time, that helped to get in the groove. We also played all the songs from beginning to end most of the times. Played every song 4-5 times and after that went in to focus on smaller breaks or parts that needed to be improved. For me that was a much better way to work than recording bit-by-bit which seems to be more or less standard these days.
