Some Questions For Zack:

SDM:  Do you remember the exact gear you were using during this tracking?

Zack: On 'A Haunting Curse' I used my Pearl Masters Birch kit. 10", 12", 14", 16" toms, and 22" kicks. Such a great set of drums.

SDM:  How long did tracking take and how was it tracked? mics, triggers, both, to tape or all digital?

Zack: 9 years ago! I'm pretty sure we spent about 3 days recording drums for this one. The album was recorded digitally. It was my first record and a big learning experience, but it's safe to say that the the bass drums were sampled and the snare might have had a sample/blend to beef things up in the overall.

SDM:  What's it like working with Erik Rutan at Mana?

Zack: It's always a great experience. Erik brings out the best in us as musicians and helps make our vision a reality. 'A Haunting Curse' was the first record I'd ever recorded. I must've been 18 at the time. It's a pleasure to be able to keep coming back and try to improve upon the agenda.

SDM:  What has changed in your setup since?

Zack: Since then I've dropped the third rack tom and have been using two rack toms in order to get the ride cymbal positioned closer. I've also switched to 12" and 13" racks instead of 10" and 12".

SDM:  Your thoughts on sound replacement software? wish it never existed?

Zack: It has its benefits as long as it's not used as a crutch. The objective is to do what it takes to make the album sound the best it can. It all comes down to the player and what kind of sound the band is going for.

SDM:  What's your favorite old-school raw drum sound? Which band and album or albums?

Zack: I'd have to say 'Morbid Tales' by Celtic Frost and 'Retaliation' by Carnivore. Very natural and "in your face."

SDM:  One piece of advice to younger kids about to record an album?

Zack: Rehearse the hell out of your songs!
