Exodus drummer & founding member Tom Hunting was interviewed by Maryland Music Magazine and discusses Exhibit B: The Human Condition, the kindness of strangers while lost on the road, and why he’s against small passenger airplanes:
What has kept Exodus going for all these years?
This is what we do… this is what we’re good at. We love the creation of new music and the recording process. I really love the recording process… it’s like building a sandwich, y’know? I think the new material is just as strong as anything we’ve done in the past. We just keep on truckin’.
What are your thoughts on Exhibit B?
It’s amazing. It’s my favorite work so far that we’ve done, it’s pretty much always how it is with me, though… I always like the new music. I love the old stuff, but it’s fun to make the new shit, too. It’s a companion record. It goes really good with the last one [The Atrocity Exhibition: Exhibit A]. It’s really crushing, really fast, really melodic.
Do you have any interesting tour stories?
Let’s see… something that I can talk about on camera? I got left for a day at a Roy Rogers truck stop on I-95 somewhere in Virginia. The band continued on and traveled to Washington D.C. My drum tech jumped into my bunk… they did a headcount. They counted his head as mine while he was sleeping in my bunk, and the band just drove on. This is in the day before cell phones… this is like [the] ‘80s. I got left there wearin’ nothin’ but a trench coat and sweat pants and slippers. Walked around there all day like a homeless person. People were buying me chicken and I’m like, “No, really – I’ve got a career! I’ve got a job!” [laughter] So they drove all the way to Washington D.C. without me, set up the gear, realizing that I wasn’t there. I finally got in touch with the management and they’re like, ‘You’re gonna take a cab, you’re gonna go to this farmer airport, you’re gonna jump on a Cessna…” and I’m like, whoa, whoa, whoa. Wait a minute! Tom don’t do Cessnas! [laughter] Buddy Holly did a Cessna…”
