Tim Yeung was born in Buffalo, NY November 27th 1978. With the inspiration of a songwriting mother and artistic father, Tim began playing drums in 1990 at the age of eleven. Within a few short years, he was recording demos and playing small venues. Attending Hochstein School of Music, Rochester, NY in 1995 with influences like Dave Weckl; Gene Hoglan; Tommy Lee; and Vinnie Colaiuta inspiring his playing, Tim sought out success. It wouldn’t be long before he would record his first national album. To date, Tim Yeung has performed and worked with National acts such as Hate Eternal, Nile, Vital Remains, Hank Williams III, Agiel, Aurora Borealis and Decrepit Birth meanwhile obtaining endorsements from Major companies. Performing live Nationally and Internationally with major label bands, Tim has proven to be one of today’s greatest young drummers.
January 2006 saw Yeung come in first in the “Fastest Feet” category at the NAMM International Fastest Drummer Contest. He beat the competition with 872 beats in sixty seconds. Tim Yeung was the initial drummer in US death metallers Hate Eternal. Eventually, he was replaced by Derek Roddy. Yeung also played on the full-length debut album of Decrepit Birth as a session drummer. He also joined Vital Remains as a session drummer during their live shows in 2003/2004.
Tim Yeung Interview:
SDM: How old were you when you started playing?
Tim: Around 11 years old or so
SDM: Did you play in a school band or any drum corps?
Tim: I started out in the school band. I did that from 4th grade to 6th.
SDM: Ever take any lessons?
Tim: I took private lessons for the first two years of playing on a kit. I took jazz & latin lessons for a year when I was a teenager but that’s it. I’m pretty much self-taught after that.
SDM: Who are your top 5 influences?
Tim: Oh man that’s a fuckin hard one because there are so many players that I’m inspired by… If I had to pick the top 5 they would have to be
1. Gene Hoglan
2. John Bonham
3. Dave Weckl
4. Carter Beauford
5. Tommy Lee
SDM: Assuming that influences don’t mean favorites, who are your favorites?
Tim: Actually those guys are all my favorites as well. I can listen to them non-stop. That’s probably why they are such big influences to me!

SDM: Can you remember a night you think was your best playing ever? If yes, when and where?
Tim: To be honest I don’t really remember my good shows. I usually remember if I play a bad show (which does happen, unfortunately) but I try to play my best every night that I play.
SDM: Do you have a favorite brand of drums or cymbals?
Tim: I love Sabian cymbals. I’m currently playing a Ddrum ”Dominion ash” acoustic kit that looks and sounds absolutely amazing.
SDM: Do you have any pre-show rituals?
Tim: Have a few Red-Bulls, Stretch out, Warm up on a practice pad for about 15 mins. Do some push-ups & Im good to go!
SDM: If you could give one piece of advice to young drummers, it would be…
Tim: Learn to know the 3 Ps. Practice, Patience & Persistence
SDM: Who gave the best live performance you’ve ever seen?
Tim: Ever? That’s hard to say. I would say for best ”recent” performances I’ve seen would be Mike Justian from Unearth. Great energy and very solid. That and the chick that plays for The Iron Maidens (all girl Maiden tribute band). I saw her play last night & she fuckin tore it up!
SDM: If you had to stop drumming, what would you want to do with your life?
Tim: I would just play a different instrument! If I couldn’t do that, I don’t know… Maybe I’d try to get into acting or movies… That or become a professional Drag Racer.
