Torge Ließmann

Torge Ließmann grew up in Norderstedt/Hamburg without any instruments, lessons or good music in sight. At the age of 14 he decided to start the punkrock band ABSCHAUM with some friends. Unfortunately it was a guitar he was meant to play. 2 years later he changed to the drums: GOOD! Then Torge Ließmann got infected by the drumming of Dave Lombardo (SLAYER) and Pete Sandoval (TERRORIZER), so he founded the Death/Grind/HC band MOTORSÄGENSERVICE and played there for 10 years as an autodidact. Several gigs, tours and recording sessions during that time made MOTORSÄGENSERVICE known beyond the borders of Germany. During these 10 years he also played bass in a ROSE TATOO cover band called ROCK ‘N’ ROLL REMEDY, a MISFITS bootleg band called BRAINEATERS and joined BETTY, a HELMET cover band on drums.

About 2001 his first solo project hit the surface: MOZEK MOTORS, a harsh goregrind outburst with programmed drums.Due to personal reasons he moved to Berlin in 2002 and suddenly found himself drumming in Germanys greatest hope in metal: THE OCEAN. With this band Torge Ließmann developed to a serious metal drummer and gained a lot of experience through 3 full-length studio recording sessions and over 160 gigs throughout Europe in the last 4 years.

Torge Ließmann Interview:

SD.com: You are part of many different style projects, which do you  prefer playing the most?

Torge: I like to play everything. The material I’m playing in The Ocean is a good challenge and encompassing a large variety of  styles, so it’s never boring to play there. In Mozek Motors I’m not  playing, just programming, but hopefully one day I will play that  goregrind blast stuff on real drums on stage. I could even imagine  having fun playing in a ska band, although I usually hate listening  to ska.

SD.com: Do you feel that programming gives you any advantage on your acoustic kit?

Torge: Of course. Especially with the mode of operation we pursue  with the Ocean. For example our composer/arranger Robin Staps can sit on some nice island’s beach and program weird drum tracks, send  me the midi-files, and I can work on that, so we don’t have to meet  in the rehearsal room all the time. Or our singer can rehearse to  the midi-songs all alone when I’m not available. I like the  challenge of translating programmed drums to a real acoustic set. Another advantage is that if a certain fill is really hard to figure  out, or to play, you just slow down the sequencer’s tempo from 150  bpm to 90 and start rehearsing it at a slower speed than the  original, and then speed it back up to 150 when you’re ready… so  you get to play stuff that you would never play otherwise. And yeah,  without my good old BOSS Dr. Rhythm, my baby Mozek Motors wouldn’t  exist.

SD.com: Can you tell us about your website, http://www.goreking.de/ and how  long you have been running it?

Torge: I started an training in webdesign 3 years ago and I needed a  project..and I love well-made goregrind and wanted to give it more
exposure.

SD.com: When did you start playing drums?

Torge: I think I was 16/17, maybe 19. So I’ve been playing playing  for about 15 years now.

SD.com: Do you play in a school band or any drum corps?

Torge: Never ever. My first band was a lousy punk-rock band. I was  14 and started playing guitar in that band. That was my first  contact with playing music and I got infected immediately.

SD.com: Ever take any lessons?

Torge: About 1 out of 15 years. But that was very helpful. I’m still  feeding on that.

SD.com: Who are your top 5 influences?

Torge: Weed, Dave Lombardo (on South of Heaven), Pete Sandoval (on  World Downfall) and Earache’s Grind Crusher simply changed my life. Today and in general I would say good music that touches me, too  many to mention here. No matter if grind, jazz or hiphop…

SD.com: Assuming that influences doesn’t mean favorites, who are your favorites?

Torge: It depends on the music. Rock for example: John Tempesta  playing for Helmet, metal: Paul Bostaph for Slayer, jazz: Chad  Wackerman for Allan Holdsworth and so on.

SD.com: Let us know some CD’s that are in your current rotation

Torge:

Black Dahlia Murder -Miasma
Mumakil – Demo
Scorpions – Blackout
Manimal – Succube
Jingo De Lunch – Perpetuum Mobile
The Police – Regatta De Blanc

actually I’m listening to mp3-mixes of all the above and more..

SD.com: Do you practice any specific rudiments or combo’s regularly?

Torge: I’m always busy with THE OCEAN stuff. To warm up I often do  some paradiddle-shit.

Torge: My Ludwig Black Beauty Snare.

SD.com: If you could give one piece of advice to younger drummers, it would be…

Torge: Don’t forget practising and don’t be afraid of the click! It  can be a friend.

SD.com: Who gave the best live performance you’ve ever seen?

Torge: John Zorns Naked City (with Joey Baron on drums) 3rd May 1992  at the Fabrik in Hamburg, Germany

SD.com: If you had to stop drumming, what else do you want to do  with your life?
