Born in 1979, Death Metal drummer from Sundsvall Sweden. I play drums in a death metal band called SYN:DROM. I also play as a session drummer in a couple of projects! I really love to play metal because it inspires me to push myself and my style of playing to the max at all times, wich is very effective if you want to constantly improve your playing (wich i want). I also work as engineer in a couple of studios. I mostly do Death Metal, punk and Hardcore recordings. I do bigger bigger/fullength productions as well as promo/demo recordings!

Right now my mission as a drummer is to improve my blastbeat speed and control and and work on my doubles and singels on the bassdrums! Oh! and I always enjoy a bottle of jack and a few Onkel Kånkel tunes..

Daniel Mikaelsson Interview:

SDM How old were you when you started playing?

Daniel: I actually Started playing guitar and bass and didn’t get into drumming at all until i was about 18 years old i think! I started playing more seriously when i was around 21 or so. So i’ve been playing drums for about 12 years now.

SDM: Did you play in a school band or any drum corps?

Daniel: I have never taken a drum lesson in my life, i just started playing and wanted to play fast and intense, started off with punk and heavy metal and later got into death metal. I have been listening to alot of bands and drummers and trying  to learn that way!

SDM: Who are your top 5 metal influences?

Daniel: I’d say George Kollias, Jade Simonetto, Nils Fjellström, Timo Häkkinen, and George Kollias! Haha! Seriously, there are soo many great metal drummers out there but for now these are my top 5! George is a huge source of inspiration for me and a great teacher too! Anyone into extreme drumming  should definetly check out his DVD intense metal drumming.

SDM: Who are some other of your favorites?

Daniel: Vitek is definetly another super drummer who has inspired me a lot! Derek Roddy is fantastic too. Growing up i was listening to a lot of Mötley Crüe so Tommy Lee has always had a special place in my heart! I really like his heavy and big grooves! But in general any drummer or musician who puts their soul into what they are doing!

SDM: Let us know 5 CD’s that are in your current rotation

Daniel: Looking in my iPod i see there’s lots of diferent stuff so here we go. Aeon- Rise to dominate, Nile- Those whom the gods detest, Bloodbath- The fantomless mastery, Job for a cowboy- Ruination David Bowie – Hunky dory, Seriously you need some ”air” sometimes! And it’s a fantastic record that contains great songwriting and mucisianship!

SDM: What do you do to warm up before a show?

Daniel: I’m am actually not good at this i think i need to ask that question to other drummers haha! What i do is that i try to find a calm place backstage and then i do some different patterns, singlestrokes and rolls etc to warm up my wrists. I also have this gibraltar kick-pad that i hook up my pedals to and work my feet. I try to get as much as possible from soundcheck as well.

SDM: Do you read music? Regardless of answering yes or no, please tell us how it might have effected your playing?

Daniel: No but i think that i have learned to listen and analyze songs and structures instead!

SDM: Can you tell us about the gear you use?

Daniel: Tama drums and hardware (rockstar) Axis A-longboards, Ddrum triggers, Roland TD 12 trigger brain. TRX cymbals (endorsement) Sabian cymbals. Wincent drumsticks (endorsement). I just want reliable and good stuff yhat i can trust!

SDM: If you could give one piece of advice to young drummers, it would be…

Daniel: Listen to your influences/idols and try to pick up what they are doing, they can teach you a lot if you just listen! BUT..  always be yourself, don’t try to BE anyone else! Find out what works for you and just go for it!

SDM: Who gave the best live performance you’ve ever seen?

Daniel: Oh.. i’ve seen a lot of great performances but George Kollias is always impressive! He is so solid in all tempos! And a great performer!

SDM: Aside from drumming, what else do you like to do?

Daniel: I work in a studio as engineer and is totally into sound engineering and microphones old vintage gear and acoustics! Thats what i really love to to exept for drumming!
