Ash Pearson Interview / 3IOB

Interview With Ash Pearson – 3 Inches of Blood
By: Craig Sternberg

SDM: Tell us about the new album… How does this 3 inches of blood album differ from ones in the past?

Ash: This album is about as true to the bands sound live than on previous records. Everything was really well rehearsed and well recorded, in an organic fashion. We didn’t use click tracks, quantize or sound replace. Most everything you hear is natural drums with a live feel to it.

SDM: How is your drumming different on this record as opposed to other 3 inches of blood records?

Ash: I tried to keep an open palette when approaching a lot of these drum parts. Having a natural groove throughout the songs to me was important so I held that in mind when playing anything from fills to off times rhythms to straight rocking 4/4 as needed. So the songs come across with a steady flow instead of steady and rigid.

SDM: Were you a fan of the band before you joined or were you familiar with the material at all?

Ash: A couple groups I used to play with, opened for 3iob in whistler b.c. on a few occasions. That’s where I was first exposed to the bands music, but never went and bought their cd’s or really got into the music. I was a fan in the sense I knew they were a great live band.

SDM: How does your drumming style differ from drummers in band’s past?

Ash: My style from what I gather from listening to old records, and seeing old live footage of the band is a difference of consistency. Advance and Blades in my opinion have great drumming on them. I have a lot of fun playing the parts live. To me when researching the band there seemed to be a difference between the recorded music and how it was delivered live. Be it tempos or just deviating from the song more than is needed. I strive to maintain a consistent sound that best represents the band by taking compliments but more importantly criticisms and turning them into strengths.

SDM: Tell us about other band’s you been in, which ones would you recommend to 3 inches of blood fans?

Ash: Angel Grinder was my first real band which had more death metal speed elements to it, Just Cause was another which I only played live with, but they have a killer record called ‘Finger it out’ which is worth checking out. My last band was  Sound of the Swarm which was more progressive metal. I would suggest listening to some Angel Grinder and Sound of the Swarm on myspace.
